🎶 Music at Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School 2026–27 🎶
We’re looking forward to welcoming all of our musicians back and getting another busy year of music-making underway!
Our 2026–27 extracurricular timetable is packed with opportunities for students of all ages and levels of experience. From choirs, orchestras and chamber ensembles to Soul & Funk, Folk Society, Brassies, Record Label, band clubs and our School Musical, there really is something for everyone.
We know just how much students gain from making music with others — developing confidence, friendships and musicianship, as well as being part of the many concerts, performances and events that take place throughout the year.
Most ensembles begin again from the week commencing Monday 7 September, and we’d really encourage parents and carers to have a look through the timetable with their child and encourage them to get involved.
We’re looking forward to another exciting year for the Music Department — and to seeing our rehearsal rooms full again! 🎺🎻🎷🎤🥁

As another incredible musical year comes to a close, we just wanted to say THANK YOU!
Looking back through the year, it's hard to believe just how much music has filled our school. From rehearsals before school, at lunchtimes and after school, to concerts, festivals, musicals, competitions, workshops and countless performances, our students have embraced every opportunity with commitment, enthusiasm and remarkable musicianship.
This year has seen:
🎶 Hundreds of musicians taking part in more than 35 ensembles and countless performances.
🎭 Memorable productions of Grease, Matilda and Newsies, alongside concerts showcasing every style of music.
🎼 New opportunities including our Transition Orchestra, further ensembles, expanded primary partnerships and even the beginnings of our new organ programme.
🏆 Success on regional and national stages, including performances at the Royal Albert Hall, the CBSO Centre with Music for Youth, and student success in national competitions and countless graded exams and diplomas.
🎤 Performances around the county, including Canterbury Cathedral, Colyer-Fergusson Hall, the Malthouse Theatre, St Gregory's Centre, St Peter's and many more.
We hope everyone has a wonderful, well-earned summer break. Take time to rest, recharge, keep making music, and enjoy time with family and friends.
We already have some exciting plans for next year, and we can't wait to welcome everyone back for another year filled with music, creativity, opportunity and unforgettable experiences! From Mr Burvill, Mrs Beer, Mr FB, Mr Smith, Mr Porro and everyone in the Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School Music Department!

Commem 2026 🎶
What a wonderful way to round off the musical year in Canterbury Cathedral. Seeing our now 60 (Sixty!) strong full orchestra filled by students from across every year group, alongside our choirs in full voice, was something really special!
Our students did us proud throughout a truly memorable service. Commem is always a bittersweet occasion as it marks the final performance of the year and our chance to say goodbye to those leaving us. Thank you for everything you have given to the Music Department—we wish you every success and happiness in whatever comes next!

Chamber Choir on tour! ‘Congratulations to our Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School Chamber Choir for competing in the music for youth national festival choral showcase in Birmingham on the 10th of July 2026, at the CBSO Hall. We had a great day out in stifling heat of 35°C, sang fantastically well and and have received some really positive feedback from the judges. We loved seeing other choirs perform and seeing the range of talent across the country, with groups from Doncaster, Plymouth, Sussex and Felixstowe. We even gave a quick flash mob in the Birmingham new street train station!’

What. A. Night!
A huge congratulations to every student, member of staff, volunteer and supporter who made ArtsFest 2026 such an incredible celebration of creativity. The school was buzzing from start to finish and it was fantastic to see so many families and members of our community enjoying everything our students have worked so hard to create and make.
Thank you to everyone for embracing the evening and rolling with the occasional schedule adjustment. Bringing together more than 100 musical performances in a single evening was a monumental undertaking, and the sheer number of students choosing to perform is something truly special. That level of enthusiasm, commitment and participation is exceptional in any setting, and a real testament to what is possible in a thriving state school music department!
Thank you to the LFA (PTFA fund raising for the school) for the refreshments and also our Gold supporter for the Music department. Already £30k raised for the school - For more info https://lfa.charityhive.co.uk/ and to help out.
Well done to all of our performers, technicians, artists and volunteers. You showcased the very best of our school, and we couldn't be prouder. 🎶
(It was so busy, we did not have chance to grab photos of the performances - so here are the five stages, ready for action!)

🎉 That's a wrap on Newsies! 🗞️⭐
A huge congratulations to our incredible second cast, the outstanding student band, and our brilliant backstage and technical team on a fantastic final performance tonight of our Year 7 & 8 show!
Watching two completely different casts bring the same story to life over the last two evenings has been something really special. Every performer brought their own energy, personality and heart to the stage, and what a way to finish!
To everyone who bought a ticket, cheered from the audience, supported rehearsals, helped with costumes, props, lighting, sound, front of house, or simply encouraged our students along the way—thank you. These productions only happen because of an amazing community working together.
Now it's time to fold away the papers, close the press... and take a well-earned bow. 📰👏
We're so proud of every single one of you. Until the next show... that's the final edition! 🎭

🎻 The future of our Music Department is sounding fantastic! 🎶
For the past few weeks, around 20 of our incoming Year 6 students have been meeting on a Friday after school as our Transition Orchestra, getting a head start before joining Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School in September.
They've worked incredibly hard and are already sounding amazing! It's been wonderful to see their confidence and musicianship grow, and we can't wait to welcome them into our orchestras, bands and choirs next year.
If you'd like to hear them perform, they'll be taking to the stage at ArtsFest on Thursday 9th July at 6.00pm. We'd love to see you there as they make their first performance as part of the Langton music family! 🎼✨
