The UK care sector is at a critical crossroads...

For years, providers have been asked to do more with less. Today, workforce shortages, rising operational costs, increasing regulatory demands, and growing care needs are pushing many services to breaking point.

The question is no longer whether the sector faces challenges, it's whether we're prepared to act before those challenges become a crisis.

Care providers need:
✅ Sustainable funding that reflects the true cost of care.
✅ A long-term workforce strategy that attracts and retains talented professionals.
✅ Greater recognition of care as a skilled and essential profession.
✅ Stronger collaboration between health, social care, and government to deliver meaningful change.

Every delayed decision has a real-world impact on providers, care workers, families, and the people who rely on support every day.

The care sector doesn't need more conversations about the problems. It needs action, investment, and leadership to secure its future.

What do you think is the single biggest issue facing social care right now?

🚨 Major update for health and social care providers 🚨

The Supreme Court has overruled the long-standing Cheshire West “acid test”, changing how deprivation of liberty may be assessed for people who lack capacity to make decisions about their care and living arrangements.

This could have important implications for care homes, supported living and domiciliary care services.

Providers should continue following existing DoLS and Court of Protection processes for now, but should start reviewing MCA policies, care plans, restrictive practice records, risk assessments and staff training.

📢 CQC Assessment Framework Update

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has announced that between June and October 2026, it will be piloting and testing its new assessment methodology, with a final evaluation planned for November 2026.

These pilot assessments will run alongside existing inspections and involve a voluntary sample of providers representing the diversity of the sectors CQC regulates. The aim is to test how the new approach works in practice and gather feedback from providers, inspection teams, and wider stakeholders.

This development forms part of CQC's commitment to restoring credible, consistent regulation that supports service improvement and provides assurance that people are receiving safe, high-quality care.

Providers should be aware that there will be further opportunities to contribute to the development of the new assessment approach, and CQC is currently encouraging feedback on its draft sector assessment frameworks via its online survey, which remains open until 12 June.

We encourage all care providers and sector professionals to read the full update on the CQC website and stay informed about these important changes that may shape future regulatory assessments.

l 🛡️ Safeguarding Explained — What Every Care Provider Must Know

Safeguarding is not just a policy on a shelf — it’s a fundamental part of providing safe, compassionate, and high-quality care.

Every care provider has a responsibility to protect people from:
❌ Abuse
❌ Neglect
❌ Discrimination
❌ Exploitation
❌ Poor or unsafe care practices

But safeguarding goes beyond simply reporting concerns. The CQC expects providers to create a culture where people feel safe, respected, listened to, and supported.

Here’s what every provider should have in place:

✅ Clear safeguarding policies and procedures
✅ Staff trained to recognise and report concerns
✅ Safe recruitment practices
✅ Strong leadership and accountability
✅ Effective whistleblowing procedures
✅ Regular safeguarding audits and reviews

Common safeguarding concerns inspectors often identify include:
⚠️ Poor reporting processes
⚠️ Incomplete incident documentation
⚠️ Staff lacking safeguarding knowledge
⚠️ Delays in escalating concerns

Remember — safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

Strong safeguarding practices not only support compliance but also build trust with service users, families, staff, and regulators.

💡 Regular training, mock inspections, and compliance reviews can help ensure your safeguarding systems remain effective and inspection-ready.

📝 Need Support Completing Your PIR?

Completing a Provider Information Return (PIR) can feel overwhelming but it’s one of the most important opportunities to demonstrate the quality, safety, and effectiveness of your service before an inspection even takes place.

A strong PIR helps the CQC understand:

✅ What your service does well
✅ How you keep people safe
✅ Improvements you’ve made
✅ How you ensure person-centred care
✅ The strength of your leadership and governance

Many providers struggle with:
❌ Knowing what information to include
❌ Providing enough evidence and examples
❌ Explaining improvements effectively
❌ Demonstrating compliance clearly

We can help take the stress out of the process by supporting you with:
✔️ PIR completion and review
✔️ Identifying gaps in evidence
✔️ Strengthening responses
✔️ Ensuring your submission reflects your service positively and accurately

Your PIR is more than just paperwork, it’s your opportunity to showcase the quality of care you provide every day.
