Fire Alarm: "Do I really need one?"
The answer is simple, if you stand in your business premises and shout "FIRE!" Would everyone hear you? This doesn't mean running around shouting as you wouldn't be able to do that in a fire. If the answer is no, then you need a fire alarm.
Why am I raising this now, we'll I was asked the question yesterday and I am going to Smethwick this morning to deliver a Fire Risk Assessment report to a client who needs a fire alarm and I am sure they will ask the fire alarm question!

If a fire door is wedged, propped or held open then it has to be dealt with, ignoring it means that you are accepting that it is OK.

If for operational reasons a fire door needs to be held open and you have a fire alarm system, then we have a solution, but believe me it isn't holding it open with a fire extinguisher!!

The official government fire statistics came out just before Christmas, these are the figures for the year 2011/12, they are always the best part of a year behind.
So for that year there were 272 000 fires in buildings in the UK and of those 27 000 were in shops, factories and other commercial buildings including the entertainment industry.

There were 380 fatilities from fire three quarters of which were in dwellings which leaves 95 elsewhere.

Quite a sobering thought isn't it?

Last Photograph for this session!

If you could get close enough to that old fashioned red sign on the wall you would see it says "Keep Clear Fire Exit". Yes it made me smile too.

These sort of things would never happen where you work would the? No I didn't think so either.

Another photograph from a recent Fire Risk Assessment.
We all know that in an emergency people sometimes panic. So can you imagine the scenario, there's a fire, you are scared, you leave the room and go to sound the alarm. But which one?

A new alarm had been fitted some time ago, lots of people have walked past this every day and no one had noticed. You have to ask the question: Why didn't the alarm engineers remove the old one? Its beyond me!

A couple of photographs from a recent Fire Risk Assessment.

Multi adapters leading to multi adapters leading to... yes you get the idea and it all ends up back at one very hot plug and socket, which of course leads to a fire.

Keeping records of fire alarm tests is very important. The alarm should be tested weekly from a different call point each week.

Visiting Fire Service Officers will inspect this record when they inspect the premises and as far as they are concerned if there is no records then it hasn't been tested!

What is a fire risk asessment? http://firesafety.uk.net/fire_risk_assessments.php

A fire risk assessment is an organised and methodical look at your premises, the activities carried on there and the likelihood that a fire could start and cause harm to persons in and around the premises (Relevant Persons). See 'The Assessment' section in Why Choose Us? before you continue.
