New research published in Nature Communications has revealed how tree species diversity can help protect forests from the growing threat of extreme climate events.

The international study, which includes Dr Hannah White from ARU, analysed 88,116 forest plots across the United States to understand how forests respond when extreme heat and moisture‑related events occur at the same time. These “compound climate extremes” can amplify damage far beyond the impact of individual events.

The researchers found that forests with greater tree species diversity were better able to withstand these pressures and recover more effectively afterwards, acting as a form of “biological insurance” in an increasingly unpredictable climate.

A powerful reminder of the role biodiversity plays in keeping ecosystems stable.

“It is enormously important for universities to support the creative arts,” Sir Quentin explains.

“At a time when so much of our lives can be dominated by machines and AI, we need creative arts to keep our humanity, with our empathy and compassion, at the forefront of our dealings.”

Few illustrators are as instantly recognisable as Sir Quentin Blake. From beloved children’s books to collaborations with some of the UK’s most celebrated authors, his expressive drawings have delighted generations of readers around the world.

Awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Anglia Ruskin University in 2007, Sir Quentin remains a passionate advocate for the arts, creativity and the power of illustration to connect people and tell stories. 🌟
