NEIGHBOURHOOD WEEK 2026 - PC JAMES TOMPSON - UPDATE OF HIS DAY
👮🏽 I started my day with a school patrol in Camborne, spending time chatting with parents and pupils as they arrived for the school day. These conversations are a great opportunity to build relationships and maintain a visible police presence within the community.
🍺 From there, I was in the town on foot checking in with local businesses. A key part of my day is building strong relationships with shop owners, staff and residents, ensuring they know who their local officers are and how to contact us if they need support. During patrol, I dealt with several incidents of anti-social behaviour. This remains one of the biggest demands on neighbourhood policing and often involves dealing with confrontational groups causing issues through alcohol-related disorder, abusive language and nuisance behaviour. As a result, a quantity of alcohol was seized and a number of individuals were dispersed from the area.
🛒 After lunch, I attended our community drop-in session at Tesco for a couple of hours. These events are a fantastic way to meet local people, listen to concerns and gather information about issues affecting the community. The intelligence we receive from residents and businesses plays a vital role in helping us tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
🛍️ Whilst at the drop-in session, I detained a female suspected of shoplifting. Further enquiries resulted in suspected controlled drugs being found in her possession, and she was also wanted in connection with an unrelated shoplifting investigation.
👉🏼 Later in the afternoon, I spent time with a victim of crime following an incident I attended last week. This remains a significant safeguarding concern, and a large part of modern policing involves working alongside partner agencies to protect vulnerable people and ensure they receive the support they need. Although this work often happens behind the scenes, it is one of the most important aspects of the role.
Although I work within the Neighbourhood Policing Team, we remain available to respond to incidents when required, this will take a priority to most of my other commitments.
During the afternoon I attended a serious assault in the town. With assistance from members of the public and local store staff, we were able to identify a suspect who had left the scene prior to police arrival. Enquiries are ongoing as part of a live investigation.
The final part of my day was spent completing the less visible side of policing – submitting intelligence I’d gathered, recording crimes, processing evidence and carrying out enquiries relating to incidents dealt with throughout the day.
It was another busy and varied day, highlighting just how diverse neighbourhood policing can be. As Camborne's Neighbourhood Beat Manager, I'm proud to work alongside our communities, businesses and partner agencies to help keep the town safe and make a positive difference where it matters most. 🚓😊
