Beautiful day on site today. Delightfully peaceful as we were on a military site closed to the public. Fantastic views that the photo's just can't do justice to.
Finished the day clearing small pine around a very healthy population of around 8000 Marsh Clubmoss plants. A very rare ancient plant which is actually a type of fern and is only found on about 100 sites in the whole UK. The link below has more details.

More photos from the woodland pasture restoration. All cut material was either chipped for use elsewhere on site or cut in lengths ready to be processed for firewood. We also ring barked several large Turkey Oaks (second picture) this slowly kills the tree creating standing dead wood a fantastic habitat for a multitude of different species.

A quick video showing a woodland pasture restoration project we have been carrying out this week.
The start of the video shows the dense Holly understory. This was throughout the whole area. The remaining video shows the area after we have removed the Holly and have thinned the woodland further, removing non-native Turkey Oak.
The ground flora will now have plenty of light to establish itself creating a much more biodiverse habitat.

A few before and after photo's from a recent reed bed restoration project we have been involved with. Removing Willow scrub and trees to re-open the reed bed. A long walk into site and hard work whilst there, but very happy with the results.

Yellow as far as the eye can see.....
Ragwort is a fantastic native plant which reportedly has up to 200 different species of invertebrates that use it.
Unfortunately it can be toxic to some grazing animals and can build up in their systems (especially horses) and hence it has a somewhat unpopular image.
This particular site has 20 metre control zones on borders of the site that have grazing neighbours to try to prevent its spread.
Second picture is a days worth of ragwort pulling for a small team to help keep the control zones ragwort free.

Our local Robin pair haven't worked out Henry isn't going to be climbing and attacking their nest. Bless him Henry is fairly oblivious.

For many years whenever we at Red Kite clear scrub we try to leave the odd 'Red Kite Post' as we like to call them. Basically a trunk of a dismantled Scots pine. Our aim to provide a little standing dead wood habitat and also a perch for various species to use.
Thanks to Andi Roy for this fantastic picture of a Nightjar using one of our posts. Great to know at least one bird is on our wave length😀.
A little video below again with thanks to Andi
