NOTICE: Due to staffing issues, 2189 Calne squadron is permanently closed, and not taking new cadets. Please approach other local squadrons with joining enquiries or requests for assistance or attendance at events.

2491 Lyneham and 1304 Chippenham are our closest 2 squadrons, but there are also squadrons in devizes and Melksham.

With huge thanks to the community for their support, and to all our cadets, parents, guardians, and committee members over the years- thank you for your time and service.

Are you looking for a new hobby? Wanting to give your time to supporting our local community and young people?

Then Calne Air Cadets need your help…

2189 (Calne) squadron, Royal Air Force Air Cadets are currently looking for Adult Volunteers to join our team.

We meet twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and do activities some weekends- but you can attend as much or as little as you want to (or have time for). Whether you want to just do a few hours a week, or climb the ranks and devote multiple hours, we have a space for you.

No experience necessary, just a ‘can do’ attitude and a willingness to get stuck in. We provide full training, and you’ll be joining the largest uniformed youth organisation in the UK.

Help us to inspire our young people by visiting RAF stations, taking part in a huge range of activities, teaching them about air, space, STEM, First Aid, radios, or any of a wide range of topics. Come and run around fields, or take to the air- we have something for everyone. We promise you won’t get bored!

Two of the objects of the Air Training Corps as set out in the Royal Warrant are ‘to foster the spirit of adventure and to develop the qualities of leadership and good citizenship’
And
‘To provide training which will be useful both in service and civilian life’

With that in mind, This evening we have been learning how to budget- albeit with jelly beans and chocolate raisins, but the cadets learned some valuable lessons about planning ahead and saving, and making choices around how to spend their ‘wages’ on essentials and luxuries. And how those decisions get harder when they have less coming in or something changes.
We then spoke about how for some people those decisions are a reality and they genuinely have to decide between food and bills.

Thank goodness we have great food banks in the area to help support those people til they get back on their feet!
We will soon start a permanent collection for the food bank, so please consider if you can send in a regular item or two 😉

Next month I’ll be setting a ‘food bank challenge’ for them as well (how many meals could they make from a typical food bank parcel which we will purchase then donate to the food bank with some of their ideas)… watch this space

December saw us doing a month of Christmas themed tasks and games- called the Reindeer Games.
Here are a few photos of some the best bits of December!

We did a quiz night, made reindeer antlers, decorated gingerbread houses, had a ‘guess the film with invisible people’ quiz, made sleighs, tried to get the biggest beards, spooned ‘snowballs’, had a chip shop meal and some laughs along the way.

If you think you or your child aged 12-17 (and in year 8 or above) would be interested in next years reindeer games, and all the other stuff we do the rest of the year, drop us a message. Our next intake of cadets is likely to be February or March.

We are also looking for adult volunteers and committee members
