We had a crew down at Ram Meadow Monday night, training with our development firefighter.👨🏼‍🚒 🚒
Firefighters often need to obtain water from open sources.

When hydrants aren’t available, crews will use rigid hard suction hose to pull water from lakes, rivers, or ponds. A strainer keeps debris out, and the pump is primed to create a vacuum—allowing water to flow into the engine.

Reliable water supply, even in the most remote locations. Great training drill 👍🏻

Today marked the successful completion of a demanding two-week Breathing Apparatus course for our newest on-call recruit, Rob.

Throughout the course, Rob was pushed both physically and mentally, training in smoke-filled environments and confined spaces designed to replicate real-world incident conditions. Incorporated with complex search-and-rescue scenarios, using thermal imaging cameras and compartment searches to locate casualties and retrieve under pressure.

A strong emphasis is placed on teamwork, communication, and strict safety procedures, ensuring that every action taken on the fireground is controlled, coordinated, and effective. Alongside the practical elements, the course reinforced a solid understanding of firefighter physiology and fire behaviour, enabling informed decision-making in dynamic and hazardous environments.

Completing this course is a significant milestone, Well done to Rob! 👏

We undertake regular training in breathing apparatus. It’s a big part of our role.
It’s vital to ensuring firefighters are prepared to operate safely and effectively in some of the most challenging conditions they may face. 💪🏻

Another year done — and what a year it’s been.

2025 has been a busy and rewarding one for everyone at Bury St Edmunds.

We kicked off the year with intensive training drills alongside our newest recruit, before heading into a variety of incidents that saw us working closely with our neighbouring crews in Norfolk. Then came the summer ☀️ — one of our busiest yet — with multiple calls each day and long hours spent serving our community.

In June, our on-call crews proudly joined forces with the whole-time crews for a charity car wash 🫧, raising an amazing £800 for The Fire Fighters Charity.

October marked both a welcome and a farewell. We were pleased to welcome a new recruit to Bury On Call, while also saying goodbye to one of our long-standing Crew Managers as they retired after years of dedicated service 👨🏼‍🚒.

What you see here is just a snapshot of our day-to-day life. We want to say a heartfelt thank you to every member of our on-call crew for the hours, commitment, and sacrifices they — and their families — make to keep the people of Bury St Edmunds safe. Your dedication never goes unnoticed.

Here’s to a happy, healthy, and safe 2026 🚒

Hello Bury St Edmunds!
Meet your crew! Here are your on call crew at Bury st Edmund’s minus a few that missed this photo opportunity 🫣 As on-call firefighters we are trained emergency responders who live or work close to the fire station and can be ready to drop everything and report for duty when an emergency call comes in. We handle a wide range of incidents—including fires, medical emergencies, rescues and animal rescues while balancing the role alongside another job or daily responsibilities. On-call firefighters undergo the same core training as full-time firefighters and play a vital role in keeping your community safe, especially in rural or small-town areas.” What you see in this photo is over a 100 years of experience. Ranging from a new recruit being in for months, to the long standing crew who have done 30+ years. A wealth of experience and knowledge from not only our training but outside skills we bring to the team. We are on-call firefighters because we’re driven by the idea of helping people when they need it most. 🫶🏻

DRILL NIGHT! Working with our newest recruits and carrying out training involving an LPP (Light Portable Pump), a device used to relay water from a water source to the fire appliance or other equipment. Working to establish and maintain a water relay, which is crucial for pumping water in situations where the fire engine is not positioned next to the water supply. The training also involves creating improvised water dams to maintain the water source level and a consistent supply for the LPP. Great team work 🧑🏻‍🚒👨‍🚒
