Advice and guidance for the wearing of face coverings or masks in shops

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Wearing of Face Coverings) (England) Regulations 2021 came into force at 4am, 30 November 2021. This means that face coverings are now a legal requirement to be worn in shops, close-contact services, takeaways, some other business types and on public transport.

There are some exemptions including children under the age of 11. People with exemptions may have a hidden disability making it difficult for them to wear a face covering. These may not be readily recognisable and they may not identify as having a disability.

Your responsibilities:

• You must display a notice or signage conspicuously at the entrance(s) of the premises informing customers that face coverings are required to be worn (unless exempt)
• You should direct person’s not wearing face coverings whilst on the premises to wear such a covering (unless exempt)
• You must ensure all staff are provided with, and wear, face coverings (unless exempt)
