A pilot scheme to trial free parking for the first hour begins in Haverhill and Newmarket on Monday 22 June.

The changes in Haverhill apply to the Arts Centre, Jubilee Walk, and Lower Downs Slade car parks, while in Newmarket All Saints, The Guineas, and Rous Road car parks will also be free for the first hour.

There’s also free parking in Bury St Edmunds in the arc on Monday’s between 8am and 10am.

Councillors agreed in February to use up to £1.2m of council reserves over two years to support local high streets with free parking trials. The use of reserves will help pay for the costs covered by car parking tariffs including maintenance and more than £1 million a year that has to be paid in Business Rates for the use of the land. These costs are not covered through council tax but through the income generated from car park users.

People using the free parking in Haverhill or Newmarket will need to type in their vehicle registration into the parking machine and display their free ticket. The free ticket is not available on RingGo given this is operated through a different system to the car parking machines and they are not able to communicate with each other.

People parking in the arc in Bury St Edmunds will be able to park without a ticket between 8am and 10am on Mondays.

In all of the free parking trials, people can top up to stay longer when their free parking is due to end either on RingGo or by returning to the parking machine.

West Suffolk will be monitoring to ensure any impact of the trial is positive to the town centres.

⚠️ Car park disruption at Mildenhall Hub ⚠️

Visitors to Mildenhall Hub are advised that there will be disruption in the main car park until Friday 19 June as work begins on the new solar canopy installation.

To help ease congestion, please make full use of the overflow car park located near the main car park entrance. Alternatively, visitors can use the allotment car park.

Clear signage is displayed onsite in the car park and inside the Hub on the entrance noticeboards. As the work progresses, there will be regular updates through the website, social media and Hub tenant email distribution groups.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience and cooperation while these works are carried out.
