Our weekly kerbside food waste service has been in place for 6 months and has been well received by residents across the borough📣

This is a reminder that while warmer weather can cause food to break down more quickly, leading to stronger smells or attracting flies, there are some simple steps you can take to help prevent this.

Unlike your waste and recycling, your food waste is collected every week. This means food won't be left sitting for two weeks, helping to reduce smells and discourage flies.

Following these simple tips will help keep your caddy fresh and minimise any issues.

▶️ Keep your caddies out of direct sunlight where possible.
▶️ Always keep the lids fully closed to help keep flies out.
▶️ Empty your kitchen caddy into your outdoor caddy regularly, rather than waiting until it's completely full.
▶️ Tie your liner tightly before placing it in your outdoor caddy.
▶️ Lock your outdoor caddy by lifting the handle after adding food waste.
▶️ Rinse your kitchen caddy regularly using hot water.

Remember your food caddy can be used to recycle raw and cooked meat and fish, including bones, dairy products, such as eggs/egg shells and cheese, raw and cooked vegetables and fruit, bread, cakes, pastries, rice, pasta, beans, tea bags and coffee grounds, mouldy and out of date food removed from its packaging, pet food and leftover food from plates.

🚨 As part of the campaign, we're sharing emergency preparedness tips on selected days throughout September to help residents stay safe and ready for unexpected situations.

📍 Day 9: Know Who to Call

Would you know who to contact in an emergency?

Having important phone numbers saved and easily accessible can make a huge difference when every minute counts.

📞 Use 999 for life-threatening emergencies or when a crime is in progress
📞 Use 111 for urgent medical advice when it's not an emergency
📞 Keep contact details for utility providers, insurers and trusted family members to hand
📞 Make sure everyone in your household knows where to find important numbers

Taking a few moments to update your contacts today could save valuable time when you need it most.

💡 Be prepared, not scared.
