Today, our thoughts are with the families, friends, and colleagues of Bill Ewen and Frank Petsch of Marine Rescue New South Wales, Australia, who tragically lost their lives in Ballina last month while serving their community.

Alongside the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) and search and rescue organisations around the world, all RNLI stations will fly the flag at half-mast on Monday 15th June in their memory.

Bill and Frank’s ultimate sacrifice is a powerful reminder of the courage, dedication, and selflessness shown every day by those who answer the call to save lives at sea. Their commitment to helping others will never be forgotten.

As we join the international search and rescue community in paying tribute, we honour not only Bill and Frank’s service but also the unwavering dedication of all maritime search and rescue personnel who put themselves at risk for the safety of others.

Bill originated from Aberdeenshire before retiring to Australia and joining Marine Rescue New South Wales.

Rest in peace, Bill and Frank. Your service, courage, and sacrifice will always be remembered. 💙

Friday 12th June @ 1744

We were called out following a report of a person on a surfboard drifting eastward approximately 500m off Port Seton.

Our volunteer crew was soon on scene after a bouncy crossing. At this point coastguard rescue teams from North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team and Fisherrow Coastguard were establishing that the potential casualty had been seen walking ashore with their board. We were then stood down to return back to Kinghorn.

If you see anyone in difficulty, please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along to our Coffee and Plants morning today.

With your support and generosity, we raised over £2,500 to help us continue saving lives at sea.

So far this year, our volunteer team has responded to 36 taskings, the most recent at 0126 on Friday morning where we supported police with a shoreline search between Granton and Leith. Fortunately, the casualty was located safe and well by police in Edinburgh.

In addition, our volunteer visits team have hosted over 120 people this week, in collaboration with our colleagues at RNLI Lifeguards Scotland, to show them our station and talk about beach and coast safety.

Monday 25th May @ 1426

Our volunteer crew was paged today following a call for help from a group of paddleboarders between Aberdour Silver Sands and Burntisland.

We launched and quickly located the three women around 0.5miles west of Burntisland. They had drifted further east than anticipated but had done the right thing by rafting up and staying together in a group and calling for help. This made them much easier to locate. We got the three onboard the lifeboat, with their paddleboards and returned them to Aberdour. At Silver Sands we were met by RNLI Lifeguards Scotland who took the casualties ashore where Kinghorn Coastguard Rescue Team was also waiting.

If you are going paddleboarding, please:

🛟 Wear a buoyancy aid

🛟 Carry a phone in a waterproof pouch

🛟 Wear the correct leash

🛟 Avoid offshore winds

🛟 Wear suitable clothing so you keep warm

🛟 Check the weather forecast and tide times before you set out

🛟 If you are in a group, and get into difficulty, keep together and tether boards together.

Sunday Shout Update

Our team has had ten taskings so far in May. Here is an update:

24/2026 - 10th May @ 1730

Our team was tasked by the coastguard to assist a small RIB which was struggling to tow an ocean rowing boat upwind to Dalgety Bay. After arriving on scene and assessing conditions, we elected to tow the rowing boat into Burntisland harbour so they could shelter until the wind dropped. This was new helm Richard’s first callout in command of the lifeboat.

25/2026 – 11th May @ 0121

We were tasked to a person in the water at Portobello beach. After standing off for some time, coastguard personnel entered the water and escorted the casualty ashore. This was our other new helm, Andrei’s first tasking in command of the lifeboat and volunteer crew.

30/2026 – 23rd May @ 1212

The pagers sounded after a pan-pan call was received from a yacht suffering engine failure off Burntisland. The vessel was taken the short distance into Burntisland harbour.

32/2026 – 24th May @ 1126

Whilst on routine training, the crew was tasked to a report of an empty kayak off Portobello. On arrival, the craft was quickly located, and it was confirmed that it was an inflatable lilo. This was recovered and a search of the vicinity carried out. Fortunately, nothing was found and coastguard teams also searched the beach, and it was concluded no one was still in the water.

In addition to those tasking highlighted, we have also attended six taskings to people in the water or threatening to enter the water around our patch.

Here are our top tips for safe use of the water.

🔸️Always check the weather forecast before you head out, and consider how it may change during the course of the day

🔸️Have a means of calling for help such as a VHF radio or charged mobile phone. Ensure phones are zipped into waterproof pockets/pouches

🔸️Always check your boat and ensure it is well serviced and maintained. Modern petrol with increased ethanol content (E10) can attract more moisture into your fuel system and if it sits for some time can degrade fuel system components, as well as not running very well. Consider using E5 petrol and ideally don’t let any fuel sit for a prolonged period

🔸️Always wear a lifejacket and have appropriate safety equipment

🔸️Inflatable toys are not suitable for use at the coast but if you see one being blown offshore, please report it to the coastguard immediately as this could save a much bigger response later

🔸️Put your name and contact information on any watercraft or toys so if they are found, we can call you to confirm no one is in difficulty

The RNLI website contains much more safety information tailored to your coastal activity.
