END OF SOMERSET PATROLS FOR 2026: as of 6pm today, there will be no lifeguarded beaches in Somerset for the rest of the year. If you’re visiting the Somerset beaches over the next few weeks, please follow the following pieces of advice: 1) check the tide times & local conditions, 2) read local signage and be aware of the hazards, 3) speak to the beach wardens/rangers in-situ about staying safe during your visit, 4) if you find yourself in trouble in the water, float to live & 5) if you see someone else in danger in the water, call 999 & ask for the coastguard. See y’all next summer! 💉💊❤️

*MID-AUGUST UPDATE* - more helicopters, more sun & over 4,000 preventative actions & face-to-face interactions by lifeguards. Key highlights include a further three incidences of tidal cutoff assists by Henry & Noah, multiple searches & major first aids undertaken by Roman, Tom, Megan & Andy, and two SUPs assisted to shore on a dropping tide by Noah. Patrols on Brean Sands & Burnham-on-Sea continue daily until Sunday 6th September, so please visit a lifeguarded beach if you’re dropping into coastal Somerset this season..!

A few snaps from Wednesday evening’s joint-ops training session with our local lifeboat station. Windy, low interval & big tides made for a challenge as guards and boat crew practiced patient transfer from board to boat.

SEASON ‘26 UPDATE ON WEEK 4: it’s been mostly sunny & calm in terms of weather on the Sedgemoor beaches over the past few weeks. But lifeguards have been busy..! Board rescues from Henry, Brett & Tom (including a dog in distress on Brean!), multiple assists from Noah & Megan and Henry helping a group of tourists escape tidal cut off from the bottom of Brean down. Helicopters, boats & mud also featured. As of today, team Somerset has undertaken over 2000 preventative actions & face-to-face conversations with the public. Roll on August, lets hope the weather sticks..!

🟥 PATROLS ARE NOW LIVE 🟨 on Burnham-on-Sea & Brean Sands, 10am-6pm daily until Sunday 6th September. Team Burnham experienced a visit from ITV News West Country this morning, documenting local hazards & key safety advice for beachgoers to Somerset beaches this summer. Key tips: A) always visit a lifeguarded beach & talk to the lifeguards there, B) consider sun safety (think hat, sun cream, water & sun glasses!), C) check the tide & weather information for the day and plan accordingly, D) if you find yourself in trouble in the water F L O A T & E) if you see someone else in trouble, call 999 & ask for the coastguard.

Casualty care for lifguards: as well as aiding people at sea, our team undertake an advanced life support & first aid course to enhance their range of skills on a yearly basis. Last summer Somerset lifeguards managed over 30 first aid incidents, including 6 ambulance evacuations. Lifeguards can be of assistance both in the water & on land, so we always recommend visiting a lifeguarded beach.

🟥 2026 INDUCTION SUPER-CUT 🟨 - the last two weeks has seen our peak season team put through their paces; fitness testing, rescue skills, vehicle & first aid competencies all ticked off & demonstrated. Lifeguard patrols begin on Saturday 4th July on Burnham-on-Sea & Brean Sands - 10am-6pm daily - until Sunday 7th September. When visiting the coast this summer, please remember to: a) check the conditions (weather, tides, UV levels); b) always swim at a lifeguarded beach 🟥🟨; c) if you find yourself in trouble in the water, FLOAT TO LIVE; d) call 999 and for the coastguard if you see someone else in trouble. With the weather forecast to be particularly warm this weekend, please take particular care near and in the water if you are heading out to enjoy the coast in or around Burnham.

Research by the Royal Livesaving Society and the University of Bournemouth has shown that the risk of accidental drowning increases five-fold when the air temperature gets above 25 degrees centigrade (which it is forecast to do over the weekend).

In and around Burnham particularly, please be aware of the risk of getting stuck in the mud (especially at lower states of the tide) and please observe the safety warnings on the Town slip about access down the slipway.

Remember - if you find yourself in, or think you might be getting into trouble, or see someone else in a similar position - call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
