Summer is over… or is it? If you would like to get qualified ready for the 2026 season, Somerset RNLI Lifeguards will be running a National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualfiication course over October for future candidates. This will be located in Weston & Bridgewater bays, and dates are to be confirmed. If you are interested in participating, please email [email protected] or DM us on our social media. SEASON 2025 ✅ As of Sunday 7th of September, patrols on Somerset beaches have ceased for the year.
Lifeguards on Brean Sands & Burnham-on-Sea beach have taken approximately 500 preventative actions, adviced/spoken to the on public approx 4,800 occasions & have aided 98 people this summer, with the last few weeks seeing an uptick in major first aids (including 4 evacuations via ambulance). On Wednesday our lifeguards partook in a Sandhole Collapse training exercise organised by the - alongside other local volunteer rescue organisations, a casualty was recovered from the sand & treated by lifeguards. On Wednesday Henry, Jakob & Megan took a trip to our local Coastguard station for a showcase of how they undertake mud rescues. This also included a quick visit to to see their hovercrafts, also used for mud rescues. As a prominent & dangerous fixture of coastal Somerset, serious mud reacues are often a multi-agency incident, with each organisation providing their specialist procedures and equipment.

*MID SEASON UPDATE* it is now 5 weeks into patrols on the Sedgemoor beaches. According to logged data, lifeguards have had just short of 2,000 face-to-face conversations with the public, taken preventative actions over 200 times and been involved with over 40 incidents since 10am; Saturday 5th of July. Notable occurances over the past few weeks include:
- Rescuing a group of 5 from a tidal cut off at the base of Brean Down
- Rescuing a child from the mud on Burnham-on-Sea beach
- Attempting to rescue a beached common dolphin on Berrow with an outgoing tide

Trading the whistle for a stethoscope: today was LG Sydney’s last day on patrol before starting her new job as a junior doctor! Sydney did two seasons in the Wirral before getting stuck in on the Somerset beaches and quickly became a valuable member of the team. We wish her all the best for the future! ☀️⛱
