BARB Search & Rescue - Burnham-on-Sea hovercraft We are a registered charity that operates two life-saving rescue hovercrafts in Burnham-on-Sea. www.barb.org.uk

The protection and preservation of life, in particular but not exclusively, by providing a team of trained volunteers with the skills to provide a Search & Rescue Hovercraft within the Bridgwater Bay area of Somerset, with the aim of assisting other emergency services, statutory agencies and the public.

Looking for something fun to do on Sunday 30th August? 🚒🚑🚓

Come along to Emergency Services Day for a brilliant family day out by the beach in Burnham-on-Sea! Watch exciting demos from the RNLI and BARB, explore vintage and modern fire engines, see American police cars up close, learn more about road safety, and meet Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue. There’ll also be plenty of stalls to browse plus live entertainment in the arena from local dance groups and the town band.

A great day to celebrate the amazing emergency services and community organisations that do so much for us. 💙

FUNDRAISING: A big thank you goes to All-Sorts Community Choir for holding a very successful tea party concert for BARB earlier this month, raising an amazing £1,063 towards our work!

🎉 A huge congratulations to our fantastic crew members! Several of our wonderful team have been formally presented with certificates as new hovercraft crew, having completed BARB’s initial hovercraft training programme over the last few months, learning basic hovercraft flying manoeuvres including emergency stops, piloting the craft through slalom poles and more, enabling them to go on the crafts during a call-out. This is the step before training as a pilot. Well done all and thanks for your dedication to BARB.

CALL-OUT: BARB’s volunteers had an early wake-up when they were called out on Saturday morning at 1.30am to assist Coastguards and Police in the search for a missing person in Burnham.

As the team arrived to carry out searches along the beach and seafront, we received positive news that the missing woman had been found safely and our dedicated volunteers were able to stand down.

The incident was a fresh reminder that BARB’s teams are on-call 24/7 to help.

If you find yourself in difficulty along the coastline, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

FUNDRAISING: A huge thank you to everyone who supported BARB’s community open day and ‘pooches on parade’ event yesterday, which was a huge success!
We had a great turnout of visitors through the day and thank our volunteers for their time and getting into the spirit of the occasion with Hawaii-themed clothes! Thank you all!

🚨 CALL-OUT: BARB’s volunteers were called out on Saturday morning by Burnham Coastguards alongside the ambulance service and beach wardens to help an injured beach walker next to Brean Down.

The casualty had suffered a suspected broken ankle after a fall on the rocks and was in a great deal of pain.

Our hovercraft, which was already out on training, flew from Burnham to the scene and the BARB volunteers then assisted Coastguards in safely moving the lady from the sand onto a stretcher and into an ambulance.

She was taken to Weston General Hospital for treatment and our thoughts are with her for a quick recovery.

This incident was a great example of close working by multiple agencies for a positive outcome.
