Celebrating Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month June 2026
June marks Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) History Month; a time to celebrate the rich culture, heritage and contributions of GRT communities, both locally and across the UK.
Since its launch in 2008, GRT History Month has aimed to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions and highlight the important role Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities play in shaping our shared society.
Here in Somerset, this work is especially important. GRT communities form part of the county’s history and present-day life, yet many still face barriers, inequalities and discrimination.
During the month, the Gypsy and Traveller flag will be flown at County Hall in Taunton and several Somerset Council locations, standing as a visible sign of respect, recognition and our collective commitment to inclusion.
Alongside this, we are also celebrating local culture and creativity, including the horse sculpture in Bridgwater that was created by the Sculptor Jake Bowers which reflects the strong cultural connection to horses within Gypsy and Traveller communities and provides a lasting symbol of heritage within our county.
Flying the flag and celebrating local landmarks is more than symbolic. It reflects our ongoing work to:
• promote understanding and challenge stereotypes
• improve access to services and opportunities
• strengthen relationships with GRT communities across Somerset
GRT History Month is also a moment to learn more, whether through
conversations, training, or exploring the stories and histories that are too often overlooked.
Together, we can help build a Somerset where everyone feels respected, valued, and able to thrive. Key an eye out for some 'pop-up' information sessions at the library!
