At last week’s Full Council meeting, a motion was moved to protect and expand local council housing stock while calling for an end to the "Right to Buy" scheme.
With over 1,000 families currently on the housing waiting list, the proposal highlighted the ongoing impact of selling off local homes at steep discounts.
The motion was successfully passed by a vote of 35 to 23, supported by Labour councillors committed to securing social housing for working people.
In contrast, Reform UK councillors voted against the measure, defending private landlord interests and aligning with national party policy to continue council house sales. Despite their attempts to justify the vote, their stance—along with previous votes such as supporting local fracking—reflects an agenda driven by corporate interests rather than local housing needs.
