Reports have been received of possible cases of avian botulism in Bristol Harbour.

The Harbour Authority was advised yesterday evening by Bath Swan Rescue of a possible outbreak of avian botulism affecting birds within Bristol Harbour. As things stand, we await confirmation from Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) testing. The issue is being treated as a precautionary incident, with early intervention measures implemented while awaiting laboratory confirmation. Whilst these reported cases are a cause for us to be alert to potentially infected birds, it is not a cause for any alarm.

Precautionary measures currently being undertaken are:
• Harbour teams instructed to undertake enhanced patrols for sick or dead birds
• Arrangements made for litter removal and inspection of areas with high bird activity, including St Augustine's Reach and reed bed areas.
• Public warning notices and posters deployed around affected locations.
• Liaison with the Parks team to share risk assessments and safe systems of work for handling deceased birds. This follows similar reports in St George’s Park, and in other areas in the region such as Bath and Bradford-on-Avon.

The advice for residents, visitors and businesses is as below. This is being shared via posters across the harbour estate, direct with stakeholders and via the press:
• Do not touch sick, injured, or dead animals
• Keep dogs on a lead near the harbour
• Do not allow dogs to enter the water
• Do not feed wild birds
• Avoid contact with the water where possible
• If fishing, do not use organic bait including live bait, bread or meat.
• If you find a dead or sick bird or fish in the Harbour please do one of the following:
o Phone Bristol City Council on 0117 9222 000; or
o Visit our website to Report a dead animal that needs to be removed

Updates will be shared once more information is gathered and further assessments have been undertaken.

Excited to share a visit to the old bus depot site in Oldbury Court Estate alongside Cllr Louis Martin, Frome Vale Labour Councillor, Kate Spreadbury (Chair of Friends of Oldbury Court Park) and the lead designers working on the site plus a couple of camera shy parks officers!

Real progress has already been made on the site. The building has been secured, the roof has been replaced, holes patched up and a patch of fencing around the site made secure. A new entrance is also being planned, along with some brand new trees to be planted at the entrance of the site.

There's a lot happening across Frome Vale at the moment, and it's a real privilege to get a look behind the scenes at projects like this before they're fully public. More updates to follow as things develop.

Really pleased to see the Elderly People warning signs have been put up outside of Purdy Court on New Station Road.

Residents there have been dealing with the road being used as a rat run, with regular speeding traffic and elderly residents were understandably nervous about crossing to get to the highstreet and the shops. During I visit to Purdy Court residents asked for signage to help address this and I'm glad we've been able to get it sorted.

Small change, but it makes a real difference to people's confidence getting around their own neighbourhood.

Quick update regarding the handwashing facilities in the Oldbury Court Park Toilets

A couple of weeks ago some residents highlighted that the toilets in Oldbury Court Park were not being maintained with soap and running water. I sent this issue off to officers who are now looking into this and are considering getting new units as finding replacement parts for the old units are proving difficult to find. I will keep you all updated on the progress of this and hopefully the issue will be resolved soon.

A huge welcome to Cllr Sean Rhodes for Kingswood who has joined the Green Party!

I've had the pleasure of knowing and working alongside Sean for a while now and I can say without hesitation that he is exactly the kind of person you want in local politics. He works hard on the issues that matter to his community, he has real integrity and he's never afraid to speak up for what's right or call out what isn't.

On a personal level, Sean has been there for me during some tough times and that means a lot. I'm genuinely delighted to have him with us. I'll be supporting Sean in Kingswood this Sunday.
