We would like to reassure the public that an initial assessment of the item has been carried out and it is not considered to have been a viable explosive or to have posed a risk to people.

EOD carried out a controlled explosion of the item as a precaution shortly after 11am.
The cordon has been reduced as a result.
Work to reopen roads will begin as soon as possible.

A cordon remains in place and EOD are now at the scene.

Park Street, in Bristol, has been closed to motorists and pedestrians this morning (Friday 23 October).
At 8.25am we received a call from the member of the public concerned they had potentially witnessed a man leaving a suspicious item in the area. As a precaution, a 50m cordon is being put in place, which also includes Hill Street, St George's Road and Frogmore Street.
We have notified the explosive ordnance disposal unit (EOD), who will be attending the area to conduct further enquiries.
We recognise Park Street is a significant part of the road network and we will ensure it is reopened at the earliest opportunity. In the meantime though, we would ask people seek an alternative route.
