We have served a notice to suspend the environmental permit for a waste site near Chichester with immediate effect, following a site visit yesterday which identified several issues with fire safety and the risk of pollution.

This means that Twyford Recycling Limited must not bring more waste on to their site.

We have launched a public consultation on the permit variation for Powerfuel Portland Limited to change the permitted waste types that can be incinerated at their Portland facility.

We are minded to issue the permit variation. This means that we think the draft permit is ready to be issued but will not make the final decision until they have considered all comments carefully.

👷‍♀️ We're pleased to share that the Environment Agency has successfully completed coastal flood defence works at Minehead seafront, bringing greater protection to 355 homes and businesses in the town.

🏗️ The project, costing just under £1 million, used nearly 4,000 tonnes of pink granite rock armour sourced from near Bodmin in Cornwall to strengthen 100 metres of vulnerable coastline at the Warren, near Butlins and Minehead Golf Course.

🌊 Delivered on time and on budget, the works follow a previous phase completed in 2023 and will help reduce the risk of coastal flooding now and in the future, particularly as climate change increases that risk over time.

🚶‍♀️ The West Somerset Coast Path, connecting Minehead and Dunster, has now fully reopened.

We were out last week in a multi-agency operation which included police services across the region alongside Trading Standards, with the aim of tackling rural crime across the region.

The Environment Agency stopped around 20 vehicles which were carrying waste, and identified five unregistered waste carriers, three potential illegal waste sites, and one permitted site which we have concerns about.

We also deployed a drone to capture footage to support operational activity.

Roadside stops are a key source of intelligence for waste crime and the information we gathered will be shared across regions to build a better picture of crime networks.

Waste crime undermines legitimate waste businesses and hurts communities and the environment. We don’t hesitate to take enforcement action where appropriate.

We've been out on site again this week in Calne to check the progress of Hill's permanent capping works.. We're pleased that the last layer of clay is going on with all works due to be completed by the end of July.

We've also been out with Wiltshire Council this week who have been monitoring for odour from a statutory nuisance and environmental health perspective.

We will continue to work in partnership with Our Wiltshire and the UK Health Security Agency to share data and keep you updated.

Exciting news from the 2026 Flood and Coast Awards: Salisbury River Park has been Highly Commended in the Climate Resilient Asset Management & Engineering category, one of the most prestigious recognitions in the flood risk management sector.

The scheme, which protects more than 350 homes and businesses in Salisbury from flooding, is a true collaboration brought to life by the Environment Agency, Our Wiltshire, Salisbury City Council, Kier and AtkinsRéalis.

Construction began in summer 2022 and has progressed through some extraordinary challenges, including the wettest period in the catchment since records began in 1871. Due to complete this autumn, it's a remarkable achievement for everyone involved.

Well done to all the teams who've worked so hard to make this happen. 🏆
