Great Western Air Ambulance Charity Funded by charitable donations GWAAC serves Bristol, Gloucestershire, Bath and beyond. We need to raise £4 million a year to keep flying.

We receive no day to day funding from the Government or the National Lottery. That means we rely entirely on the generosity of you, the people we serve. We are one of few air ambulances to operate to the Gold Standard Critical Care model. Put simply we are a flying accident and emergency department flying the most highly trained doctors and paramedics to the scene.

You may have spotted more than one familiar face in last night's Emergency 24/7. 🧡

Dr Mark Winstanley was working in our Critical Care Team, bringing a seriously injured patient into Southmead Hospital, where he handed over to the hospital team.

One of the clinicians caring for the patient was Dr Phil Cowburn, who you saw working as the Trauma Team Lead at Southmead.

But did you know Dr Phil is also one of our Critical Care Doctors and one of the founders of GWAAC? Almost 20 years on, he continues to be part of our crew, helping to treat patients at the scene before they reach hospital.

Tonight on Emergency 24/7, you'll see our Critical Care Team bring a seriously injured patient to Southmead Hospital. 🧡

You'll get a glimpse into the handover, from the call ahead to alert the hospital team, to our crew arriving at the Emergency Department. You'll hear them share what has happened and the treatment the patient has received before the Southmead team takes over their care.

We're proud to share that earlier this month, Waldo Zweep received his epaulettes and became a fully signed-off Specialist Paramedic in Critical Care.

SPCC Waldo joined GWAAC in 2024 and has worked incredibly hard to reach this point. 💪
