Great Western Air Ambulance Charity

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity Funded by charitable donations GWAAC serves Bristol, Gloucestershire, Bath and beyond. We need to raise £4 million a year to keep flying.
(1)

We receive no day to day funding from the Government or the National Lottery. That means we rely entirely on the generosity of you, the people we serve. We are one of few air ambulances to operate to the Gold Standard Critical Care model. Put simply we are a flying accident and emergency department flying the most highly trained doctors and paramedics to the scene.

Today we're celebrating and everyone who helps blood reach patients who need it! 🩸

Our crew has carried blood on board for ten years and last year administered blood transfusions to 39 patients.

None of this would be possible without blood donors. Thank you to everyone who gives blood and helps provide lifesaving treatment when it's needed most. 💚💙

Did you know that every day, incredible volunteer blood bikers help make this possible too? They deliver fresh blood to our airbase and collect any unused blood from the day before. 🏍️

Recently, a young film maker named Luther shadowed these amazing volunteers and explored the journey blood takes from donation to patient. You can watch his film here:

How do you explain what an air ambulance does to your little one?🧒

You may have seen that our flying doctors and specialist paramedics recently spent some time with Zog.

During the visit, our crew explained what we do in a way children can understand. 🚁

Following a successful trial with South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, three of our Specialist Paramedics are part of a new way of working that is helping bring critical care forward to the very moment that some of the most urgent 999 calls are made.

Working from a Critical Care Desk in the 999 Control Room, they can:
🎧 Listen out for life-threatening incidents on live 999 calls
🗣️ Use their knowledge to provide immediate clinical advice to ambulance crews and 999 callers
🚑 Support decision-making on the most appropriate resources to send

The change is resulting in earlier specialist intervention for patients needing pre-hospital emergency care, and has only been possible with the support of all involved.

Find out more about how this change is helping our patients:

If you know Zog, you'll know that landing isn't always his strongest subject...

So when Zog visited our airbase recently, our Base Pilot Dan couldn't resist sharing a few pointers!

On Thursday, you can see our very own flying doctors and specialist paramedics read 'Zog and the Flying Doctors' alongside children's author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler.
