South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a British Overseas Territory located in the remote South Atlantic Ocean. This isolated archipelago consists of South Georgia, the largest island, and a chain of smaller islands known as the South Sandwich Islands. These islands are uninhabited except for temporary researchers and personnel at scientific stations, such as the British Antarctic Survey's King Edward Point station.

South Georgia lies approximately 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) southeast of the Falkland Islands and 2,700 kilometers (1,700 miles) east of South America, while the South Sandwich Islands are situated about 700 kilometers (435 miles) farther south. The islands are characterized by dramatic, glacier-covered mountains, rugged coastlines, and icy waters teeming with marine life.

The islands are a haven for wildlife, including seals, penguins, and various seabird species, making them a critical site for conservation. South Georgia, in particular, played a significant role during the era of Antarctic exploration and whaling. Today, its waters are part of one of the world’s largest marine protected areas.

Access to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is limited to research missions and occasional expedition cruises. The harsh climate, with frequent storms and sub-Antarctic temperatures, makes the area challenging to reach. These islands remain a pristine, natural sanctuary and an important hub for studying polar ecosystems and conservation efforts.
