What a fantastic day at Bristol Birdman 2026! A huge thank you to everyone who supported WECIL's Children & Young People team as they launched the WECIL Bird into Bristol Harbour.

The event brought together organisations, community groups and supporters from across Bristol, all in support of the incredible work of Grassroot Communities.

We are especially proud of the young people who helped shape the project from the very beginning, from creative workshops and design ideas through to the big reveal on the day. A special thank you to our friends at Place for supporting our preparations and helping bring the project to life.

"It was amazing, a fantastic community event with thousands of people watching from the docks. We were thrilled to win two awards chosen by the Young People's judging panel on the VIP boat in the harbour: Best Looking Bird and Best Audience Participation.

It was great to have the support of our young people and families on the day as well. It was a real feel-good Sunday for everyone involved, and the team were brilliant. We cannot thank them enough."

It's tomorrow! As part of Learning Disability Week 2026, WECIL's People’s Voice team will be delivering a free workshop in partnership with SENDaWelcome.

Thursday 18 June 2026 | 10:00am to 11:00am | Horfield Quaker Meeting House, 300 Gloucester Road, Bristol BS7 8PD

Do you want to build your confidence, learn how to spot hate crime, and understand how to report it? This interactive session is led by and for people with learning disabilities, creating a welcoming space to share experiences, ask questions and learn together.

Our People’s Voice team will be sharing their own stories, discussing real-life examples of hate crime, and leading an interactive Q&A with time for discussion and reflection.

The venue is wheelchair accessible and has a hearing loop available. Places are limited, so booking is recommended. The event is free to attend, with an optional £3 donation.

Join us in celebrating Learning Disability Week 2026! This year's theme is "Do you see me?", which is all about people with a learning disability being seen, heard and valued.

Learning Disability Week is a chance to recognise what people with a learning disability bring to society and highlight the importance of inclusion, understanding and equal opportunities. The event also reminds us why this conversation matters...

Only 26.7% of adults with a learning disability are employed, despite 86% of unemployed people with a learning disability wanting a paid job. Mencap also reports that 1 in 3 people with a learning disability spend less than one hour outside their home on a typical Saturday (information taken from the 2024 Mencap Manifesto).

We are proud to stand alongside people with learning disabilities this week and throughout the year. Find out more about Learning Disability Week and how to get involved: mencap.org.uk/learningdisabilityweek

Disability Pride Bristol 2026 is taking place at City Hall on Saturday 20th June, bringing people together for a day of workshops, stalls, conversations, creative activities, films and more.

Organised by Bristol's Disabled People's Organisation Network, this year's event is an early celebration of Disability Pride Month and one that organisers hope will become an annual tradition.

The event has been shaped by feedback from the community. Following last year's International Day of Disabled People event, organisers recognised that December can be a difficult time to get out and about for many people, leading to the move to June.

The theme for 2026 is *Nothing About Us, Without Access*, and everyone is invited to join the conversation about access in Bristol. Find out more and sign up for updates via Bristol Disability Equality Forum.

The countdown is on! This Sunday, WECIL's Children & Young People team will be taking on Bristol Birdman 2026, launching the WECIL Bird into Bristol Harbour in front of thousands of spectators.

Over the last few weeks, the WECIL team and young people have been hard at work preparing for the big day. We have kept the WECIL Bird under wraps so far, but all will be revealed this weekend.

Will it fly? Will it float? Whatever happens, we cannot wait to be part of this brilliant Bristol event and support the fundraising taking place for Grassroot Communities.

A huge thank you to our friends at Puppet Place for supporting some of the creative preparations along the way. Find out more about their work at: https://puppetplace.org/

The Listening Partnership (LP) has a fresh new look! Over the last few months, LP members have been working together to redesign the group's branding, creating a new logo and identity that better reflects who they are today.

The project was led by Disabled young people, who felt the previous branding no longer represented the group. Through workshops and discussions, they explored what LP means to them and what they wanted others to think when they first encountered the group.

The result is a new identity that feels more modern, inclusive and authentic to the young people who make LP what it is. The group have also received new hoodies and badges featuring the updated logo, and they have been incredibly proud to see their ideas brought to life.

Well done to everyone involved. We all think it looks fantastic.

It is Volunteers’ Week and we are celebrating the people who give their time, skills and experience to Disabled people and their families across the West of England.

From working alongside children and young people, to improving accessibility, helping people connect with their communities and supporting activities and events, our volunteers play a vital role in everything we do.

Their commitment helps create opportunities, strengthen connections and make a real difference for Disabled people in our communities.

To every WECIL volunteer, thank you. We could not do what we do without you!
