Promoted by Make Votes Matter, 27 Old Gloucester Street, WC1N 3AX. Make Votes Matter is a community of activists committed to introducing Proportional Representation to the House of Commons. After another disproportionate General Election, it's clear our primitive voting system is unfit for purpose. The number of votes needed to elect an MP varies dramatically from party to party. Votes across the

country were incredibly unequal in value and 68% of votes were wasted. The new government, like the last, lacks the support of most voters. The undemocratic First Past the Post electoral system even fails at its main selling point; providing strong, stable majority government. We now have a great opportunity to push for Proportional Representation - let's make the most of it! Every single one of us can take action and have an impact, by signing the petition, joining a local group or donating to win real democracy - the time is now!

"First Past the Post manufactures large majorities out of modest shares of the vote. And these majorities are built on such shallow foundations that they can collapse just as quickly as they were built."

Today in Parliament, there was a debate about Britain's voting system and whether it's still fit for purpose (spoiler alert: it's not).

Here's just a few highlights. Thank you to all the MPs who spoke out for change!

Enough is enough.

Keir Starmer was the UK's sixth Prime Minister in a decade, or fourth in four years. Now we're about to get yet another one.

The problems with UK politics run deeper than who’s in Number 10.

First Past the Post produces big majorities without real public support, and turns politics into a zero-sum scramble instead of promoting cooperation.

It’s not a system built to deal with the big challenges we face. No wonder it keeps failing.

We need more than just a new leader. We need system change: Proportional Representation now.

It's official: Andy Burnham has been elected as the new MP for Makerfield.

A longtime advocate for electoral reform, he will join the growing ranks of Proportional Representation supporters in Parliament.

We'll continue to work with him to get this message heard in Westminster.

"FPTP is holding us back. It bakes in a winner-takes-all mentality, where reaching for common ground looks like weakness.

The public gets served up a menu of U-turns by one government, reversals by the next.

It will take cooperation to break through the malaise."

Labour is right to start asking what comes next, writes Alberto Smith

"Years of feeling unrepresented by a political system... breeds resentment, and, if left unchecked, severe polarisation."

Makerfield - a former Labour safe seat long ignored by Westminster- is now dominating headlines.

Our campaigner Reuben writes about what he saw and heard on the campaign trail👇

By Reuben Bance, Fundraising Coordinator at Make Votes Matter. Heading North on a train to Wigan on a cloudy Saturday morning would normally be a mundane affair; a journey to see family, or to meet up with an old friend from university. But this is a Saturday morning in early June, so the context is...

⏰ It's a crucial time for the campaign for Proportional Representation.

Tomorrow, Makerfield is facing a crucial by-election which might well determine the future not just of the constituency, but of the country.

With rumours of an upcoming Labour leadership challenge, we must be ready to make sure electoral reform is front-and-centre of the debate.

With your help, we can brief MPs and cabinet ministers, produce high-quality research and build up local activism in key areas. This is a crucial time for the campaign, and we can't afford not to make the most of it.

That’s why, with the support of our major donors, we are launching a match fund that allows any donation you make over the next week to be doubled.

That’s right: for the next week, for any pound you donate, we’ll get two.

So if you haven't contributed yet to our crowdfunder, now is a great time to do so.

Today marks 10 years since the murder of Jo Cox.

Her message is as relevant as ever: "we have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.”

We must honour her legacy by building a political culture based on cooperation, dialogue and respect.

We won't forget you, Jo 🕯️

"Britain has entered an era of multi-party politics without building institutions capable of accommodating it."

Our politics has profoundly changed but our voting system is stuck in the past.

It's time to update it.
