🎉 Brunelcare is 85! 🎂

This week, we’re celebrating 85 years of caring for older people across the Southwest!

Founded in Bristol in October 1941 during the Bristol Blitz, Brunelcare began with a simple but powerful mission: “Keep them warm, keep them fed, keep them alive.”

Since then, we’ve grown into a charity supporting more than 2,000 people across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Somerset through our care homes, housing and home care services.

While so much has changed over the past eight and a half decades, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to helping older people live fulfilling, independent lives and making the most of every moment. 💙

A huge thank you to our residents, customers, families, colleagues, volunteers, partners and communities who have been part of our journey. Here's to celebrating our history and looking forward to the future! 🥳

Bruce Moore appointed as Brunelcare’s new Chair of Trustees.

We’re delighted to welcome Bruce Moore as Brunelcare’s new Chair of Trustees, taking up the role from 1 November 2026.

Bruce brings a wealth of experience across the housing and charity sectors. As Chief Executive of Housing 21 since 2013, he has a strong track record of leadership and a longstanding commitment to retirement living and extra care housing. He also previously served as a trustee of Brunelcare almost 20 years ago, making his return particularly special.

Bruce said: “I have long admired the work of Brunelcare and the positive difference it makes to the thousands of people it provides care and support for every day.”

As Chair, Bruce will work closely with our Board and Executive Team to deliver our 2024–2030 Strategy, with a focus on outstanding customer service, future-ready homes, personalised care and support, and creating a great place to work and thrive.

He joins us at an exciting time, as we embark on significant investment in our homes and continue to strengthen the quality of our care services, ensuring the voices of the people we support remain at the heart of our decisions.

We’d also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Graham Russell, who is stepping down as Chair for health reasons. Graham has made a valued contribution to Brunelcare over the past three years, and we’re grateful for his dedication, leadership and support. We wish him all the very best.

Please join us in welcoming Bruce back to Brunelcare and wishing him every success in his new role! 👏

Thank you so much Ross all 20 staff have said how good the training is so hopefully we can book another session when you can fit us in & I would like to join so on any other day than Thursday 🥰

It was a pleasure to return to Deerhurst Care Home this morning for another of our Caring with Confidence seminars, spending time with a wonderful group of care professionals.

Our discussions focused on grief and loss within care settings, the importance of remembering and honouring residents who have died, and something that can sometimes be overlooked – the emotional impact that caring for others can have on those providing that care.

Working in a care home is about so much more than simply providing care. Relationships are built, friendships are formed, and when a resident dies, that loss can be felt deeply by the staff who have become such an important part of their lives.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us this morning for their openness, enthusiasm and willingness to share their experiences. It was lovely to present everyone with their certificates at the end of the session.

Our Caring with Confidence seminars are provided free of charge to local care homes, as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the people who dedicate their working lives to caring for others.

Because those who spend their lives caring for others deserve care and support too.

☕🌳 This week’s outings – Ivy's Cafe & Page Park 🚌

Our visit to Ivy’s Cafe and Page Park gave residents the opportunity to enjoy a change of scenery, take in their surroundings, experience the fresh air and enjoy the simple pleasures of being out in the community. Whether it’s sitting together over a drink, watching the world go by, listening to the sounds around us or simply enjoying a peaceful moment outdoors, these little experiences can bring comfort, connection and moments of happiness. ☕️ 🌷

We are passionate about making our outings as inclusive as possible, ensuring that residents who need additional support are not left out and have the same opportunities to be part of the wider community. Every resident deserves to feel included, valued and connected to the world around them, whatever their abilities or stage of dementia.
Sometimes, it’s the simplest moments that make the biggest difference 💕

Iris D enjoyed talking about her memories of her father who grew up by the docks, David shared his extensive knowledge of Bristol transportation, and Alma recalled worrying about her son climbing the stairs in Cabot tower! 🏆 Two Brunelcare care homes receive national award reaccreditation.

We’re incredibly proud to announce that Saffron Gardens in Whitehall and Robinson House in Stockwood have both received reaccreditation through the Gold Standards Framework (GSF) Quality Hallmark Award.

The award recognises their commitment to providing high quality, person centred end of life care, ensuring people receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

🌟 This means all five of Brunelcare’s care homes now hold GSF accreditation, with Saffron Gardens and Robinson House joining Glastonbury Care Home, Little Heath and Support and Deerhurst Care Home.

A huge congratulations to both teams for this fantastic achievement and for their continued commitment to providing compassionate care. ❤️

Everybody deserves Gold Standard end of life care.

🎨 Meet Peter, 84, a resident at our Glastonbury Care Home.

Peter has been painting since he was just seven years old. Although Peter is living with dementia, his passion for art remains very much a part of who he is.

Peter remembers how to paint, especially after a hugely successful career as a design architect, and when he asks for new art supplies, the wonderful team at Glastonbury make sure he has everything he needs to keep creating. 🖌️🎨

It’s a brilliant example of person-centred care, supporting Peter to continue doing something he has loved for more than seven decades, rather than allowing his diagnosis to define what he can do.

The Alzheimer’s Society highlights how creative activities such as painting can help people living with dementia stay engaged, express themselves, maintain skills and enjoy a sense of achievement. Painting can also help someone focus on the present moment through the colours, textures and process of creating.

For Peter, it’s simple, give him a paintbrush, some colours and the freedom to create, and he’s in his happy place. 💙 His art is also used to decorate the halls of the home as well!

This Alzheimer’s Month, we’re celebrating the interests, talents and individuality of the people who call our homes their own, and the amazing teams who make sure those passions can continue.

Keep painting, Peter! 🎨👏
