This is the perfect illustration of what is wrong with Britain's trade union movement.

When she was standing for election as general secretary, the routinely imperialist-aligned Nato-serving warmonger Sharon Graham was held up to us all as a great 'leftist' and 'militant'.

She would 'hold Labour's feet to the fire', we were told before she caved and gave unconditional support to Starmer and co despite their open aim to be the most pro-business Labour government ever, and while they were supporting Israeli genocide unconditionally.

This is the true essence of her political alignment. Indeed, the only mobilising activities we've seen her give full union backing to have been in support of Nato's war against Russia:

• mobilising Unite members to refuse to fuel a Russian ship

• mobilising a Unite arms workers demonstration to demand more arms spending now

• and now this criticism of Labour's alleged 'failure' to beat the war drums loud enough and slash enough public services in pursuit of money for armaments

Take note: when we say workers can be mobilised against the war machine, there is a deafening silence from such union leaders.

It's quite another matter when it comes to mobilising them to get behind the war machine.

The British working class will achieve nothing in its own class interests, and will not know a single day of prosperity or peace, while such charlatans and demagogues are allowed to lead our organisations.

BREAK THE LINK WITH LABOUR!

Behind his latest verbal contortions lies the naked truth that Britain is a principal and criminal aggressor in what the antiwar movement has misleadingly dubbed ‘Trump’s war’ against Iran.

It is perhaps not common knowledge that in 2025 Donald Trump was the first US president to officially proclaim ‘Anticommunist Week’.

Announced just ahead of the kidnap of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, it ran from the 2-8 November 2025 and is set to recur annually. Its date coincides with the anniversary of the 1917 October Revolution in Russia.

And it is no coincidence that there is a neocon/neo-nazi ideological agenda for this chain of events, underpinning the extreme risks the regime of this ‘mad emperor’ is apparently prepared to take.

The class he serves know that Cuba is forever one of the main sources of inspiration for the oppressed masses of the world in general, and of the Americas in particular.

The determination and resilience of the Cuban people in facing down the latest and most genocidal onslaught of US imperialism is a beacon of hope for the world’s masses.

The Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist) condemns the assault and arrest of people attending the peaceful demonstration against imperialism today in Nairobi, including our Chair Joti Brar, and demands their immediate release. The demonstrators were attending a conference against imperialism in Africa, and included local Kenyan as well as international delegates.

Kenyan police, doing the work of their Anglo-French imperialist masters, brutally attacked the peaceful demonstration protesting the France-Africa “Africa Forward” summit being held in Nairobi today with tear gas and flash bangs and arrested many of the attendees.

The Kenyan comprador regime reflects the fear and weakness of their imperialist masters, unable to tolerate even peaceful political opposition. They meet the truth with censorship, repression, and lies, and they meet unarmed people with tear gas, guns, and batons.

The escalation to a region-wide war was guaranteed from the moment the imperialists began their assault, since the USA has constructed a massive network of bases and ports across the Gulf from which it wages its wars and dominates the region, and all of which are ultimately aimed at any country or people who strive for sovereignty.

Iran and every thinking person in west Asia knows full well and from bitter experience that they will never be able to achieve peace, security or sovereign development while this Sword of Damocles is suspended over their heads.

I am no religious scholar, but I increasingly read the version of shia Islam as practiced by the Iranians and their allies as another type of liberation theology.

Like the catholicism of socialist-leaning priests in Latin America in the last century, it is a product of the history and culture of the region whose struggle it represents, and has emerged also from the defeats of (including huge massacres against) the communist-led and secular mass movements of the post-ww2 period.

In pursuit of independence and sovereignty from imperialist domination, and with the genuine goal of serving the people and raising the masses out of poverty, ignorance and superexploitation, this is a religious framing that has located verses and traditions from the Koran which endorse fighting the oppressors, standing up for the oppressed everywhere, and paying particular attention to serving the poor masses.

It is notable that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, like so many revolutionary leaders before him, lived a simple life and gave all his energy to the struggle against imperialism. Both his domestic and foreign policies were focused on that goal. Hence long-term alliances with countries like the DPRK. Cuba and Venezuela.

Once again, the imperialists seem to have launched an aggressive, illegal war based on the false assumption that they had the ability to sn**ch a quick victory that would be followed up with a prolonged bout of resource looting.

But it remains the case that massacring civilians is not a proof of military prowess.

The warmongers may live to find that they have precipitated a redrawing of the map of west Asia that is entirely different from the one they were aiming at.

When British armed forces actively participate in the defence of Israel and the perpetration of Israeli crimes, and when British ministers allow US fighters and bombers to take off from British soil, those bases and all intelligence networks connected to them become valid targets for the Iranian armed forces.

The British base on occupied Cyprus has already felt Iranian fire. No doubt Diego Garcia is also on the list of targets.

But we should recognise that RAF Fairford and GCHQ in Gloucestershire are also now implicated in the illegal, unjust, aggression against sovereign Iran.

And the British working class has no meaningful response at this time. We are not organised to prevent our ruling class’s criminality. Because we have allowed a situation to develop where our trade unions and antiwar movement are under the control of imperialist stooges.

Either we rid ourselves of this Labour-aligned anti-working-class bureaucracy and start acting in our own interests against capitalist-imperialism and war, or we become sitting ducks as WW3 escalates out of control.

Now is the time to get up and get organised!
