Treating to***co dependency in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

Did you know?

Smoking is one of the top causes of preventable deaths and inequalities in our area.

Our treating to***co team presented at NHS Confed Expo, with North Somerset Council and Caafi Health, showcase our learning from our innovative and prevention focused treating to***co partnership work alongside Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire ICB, South Gloucestershire Council and Bristol City Council.

Together, we have helped support 3,016 people to quit smoking across acute and community settings last year.

For the 600 quits supported in acute care it is estimated to have prevented an estimated 33 deaths, 7 preterm births and 63 readmissions in the first 12 months alone.

We all had a wonderful time celebrating our fantastic nursing and midwifery colleagues at the Celebration of Brilliance service at Bristol Cathedral last month. 💙

It was a beautiful and uplifting service organised jointly with Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire ICB, Sirona care & health and Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP), along with partners from St John Ambulance St Peter's Hospice, social care and Military nursing.

Now we are excited to share some of the photos 📸 from the event with you, taken by our official photographer Lee Pullen Photography. Some shots have also been added into an extended video by Ed Shot it! 🎥 capturing the thanksgiving service, link in the comments below. 👇

“I'm incredibly grateful because if it had been another three years until my next mammogram and if I hadn’t noticed any changes in my breast myself, I don't know how advanced the cancer would have been by that point.”

Clare's story shows the benefits of getting involved in research. She had her breast cancer detected early thanks to research at Southmead Hospital.

The FAST MRI DYAMOND study aims to find out whether special shorter MRI scans will pick up smaller aggressive tumours that can't always be seen by mammograms in women with average breast density.

Clare’s fast MRI showed a small lump which hadn’t been identified during her mammogram, which a biopsy showed was cancer. She went on to have surgery and radiotherapy and is now clear of cancer.

The study team are recruiting women aged 50-52 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Cornwall and south London, who have had their first mammogram. If their mammogram shows they have average breast density and they have not needed a follow up assessment, then they are invited to have a fast MRI scan.

FAST MRI DYAMOND is led by Dr Lyn Jones, Consultant Radiologist at North Bristol NHS Trust, and funded by a Medical Research Council (MRC) and NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) partnership.

We're grateful to BBC Bristol for covering Clare's story as part of their Wake Up Call.

Did you see our 3D Medical Centre on the The One Show yesterday? 📺

Katie Piper visited the centre to see Ella having her face scanned by Senior Reconstructive Scientist Amy for a face guard to enable her to return to playing hockey.

The centre in Frenchay is the first of its kind in the UK, offering 3D scanning, design and printing of bespoke prosthetics and devices under one roof. The majority of the equipment within the centre is funded by generous donations to Southmead Hospital Charity.

Ella has been supported by the centre following reconstructive surgery after a car accident.

You can watch back and see the centre online - it features from five minutes into the programme: 🔗 https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002x7nv/the-one-show-02062026
