How should WECA pay for franchising?

We know that people in the West of England want more control over the buses through franchising.

There are a few ways to fund franchising: a precept on council tax; levies on parking or businesses; grants from central government; or a mix of all of them.

There's just under two weeks to fill in the Next Stop Better Buses survey!

The Next Stop Better Buses survey asks about your experiences of buses in your area.

But we know that we need better buses across the whole of the West of England, so that we all can travel where we need to, when we need to.

We need to be back in control of our buses so that we have the best chance of improving our network.

It’s our chance to demand Franchising!
We know we don’t need yet another survey to show that the West of England needs better buses. That’s obvious.

However, this is the first time your voice is being heard by a new Mayor, who’s talking the talk about making change. The survey asks for our priorities with what we should change first, like frequency of services, and reliability.

At the moment, she can’t make those changes herself, she has to ask FirstBus for them. We’ll have to compromise for the sake of FirstBus’ profits.

Franchising would bring that power back to public control. She’d be able to walk the walk.

Let’s tell her loud and clear that we want to Reclaim Our Buses: we want franchising!

âš  Update: The overnight road closure will not take place tonight because of the weather forecast. This means the A4 Portway will remain open.

🚧 A4 Portway overnight road closure - Thurs 4 Sept 🚧

We need to close a section of the A4 Portway, between West Town Road and Barrow Hill Road, in both directions tomorrow night, from 8pm to 6am.

This is so we can complete our resurfacing work outside the Park & Ride’s new bus entrance.

As before, access along the Portway for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained but all motor vehicles, including HGVs, will be diverted through Shirehampton.

Vehicles will still be able to enter Portway Park & Ride via West Town Road, with marshals on hand to guide vehicles wishing to exit.

The number 9 bus will still pick up and drop-off outside the Park & Ride during the overnight closure, while the 37 and X14 will be diverted.

🚍 We're looking forward to reopening Portway Park & Ride's remodelled bus entrance on Friday 12 September. From then onwards you'll once again be able to catch the number 9 from the Park & Ride site!

The West of England bus service changes come into effect on Sunday, and they’re a mixed bag…

Longer running hours is great for shift workers, and reducing car dependency and traffic on the roads by more services at peak hours is always a good thing.

However, while these improvements are great for bus users based in Bristol, some services in the rest of the West of England are being cut. We need franchising so that everyone in the West of England can have good bus services!
