Craven Wood volunteer day this Saturday!

Come and join us for our next work session, 10am–12.30pm (or just pop along for as long as you can).

We’ll be back in the orchard area, tackling the undergrowth and hopefully finishing the job we started last month. There’ll also be some replacement steps going in if anyone needs to let off some steam!

Meet at 10am at the southern end of The Causeway, BN2 0FP

And good news: it looks like it’ll be a lot less hot than last time!

Everyone welcome, no experience needed. Come along, lend a hand and enjoy a morning in the woodland.

A family adventure in Sheepcote Valley 🌿

Come and explore the wild side of East Brighton together! A fun, hands-on walk for families, with plenty of opportunities to explore, create, express, get moving, slow down and tune into your senses — and, of course, forage for blackberries along the way. Bring a container so you can take some home. 🫐

We’ll finish with a picnic in East Brighton Park, with food provided!

Tuesday 25 August · 10am–1pm
Led by Abbie Chay from Wandering Emotions

FREE but booking essential via eventbrite:

A good job done yesterday! 🍎

Not many apples this year after last year’s bumper crop — perhaps the lack of water and all the heat have taken their toll. But we still managed to clear quite a bit of the ground around the orchard, making it easier to get in and reach the apples when they’re ready.

A few more weeks and we should be picking!

Craven Wood Volunteer Day – Saturday 8 August, 10am 🌳

After a little pause last month, when we took time to dream about the future of Craven Wood, we’re back for another volunteer session!

Last month we gathered, with the wonderful facilitation of Dylan Walker, to imagine what the Wood could become in the years ahead. This Saturday we’re getting practical again, clearing the orchard area so everyone can enjoy the apples that are nearly ripe. 🍎

Come and join us! We’ll provide the tools, just bring gloves, suitable footwear and yourself.

The Causeway entrance, BN2 0FP
10am–12pm

See you there?

Following our wonderful Craven Wood Visioning Workshop, this feels like gold. ✨

The newly published Local Nature Recovery Strategies for Sussex are such a precious resource. As we develop a shared vision for Craven Wood, we'll be exploring these priorities carefully to help ensure our woodland becomes part of Sussex's wider nature recovery story.

A huge shout-out to all the community gardens, volunteer groups, local charities, schools, and neighbourhood projects already doing so much to care for nature. Every habitat restored, every tree planted, every wild patch protected, and every person inspired helps create a healthier, more connected landscape for wildlife and people.

A big thank you to Sussex Wildlife Trust and everyone involved in producing this important piece of work.

Last Saturday we held our Craven Wood Shared Future session, a visioning workshop that invited us to travel into the future and imagine what Craven Wood could become.

Bringing together volunteers, local organisations, community partners and people with a range of knowledge and experience, we explored what we'd love to see in the woodland over the coming years, and what practical steps we can take to get there.

The conversations covered everything from biodiversity, water management and woodland resilience to citizen science, volunteering, accessibility, education, arts and community events. There was a real sense of possibility, with so many thoughtful ideas emerging and a shared willingness to work together.

We're now bringing all of those ideas together into a report and starting to shape them into a practical plan for the future of Craven Wood. This is just the beginning, and we're looking forward to building on the momentum and growing a wider community around the woodland.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, and especially to Dylan Walker for facilitating such an inspiring time-travelling session and helping us think boldly about the future.

Here's to the next chapter for Craven Wood!

Craven Wood Volunteer Morning

It’s that time again: this Saturday 2nd May is looking warm and sunny, with rain not arriving until the afternoon.

Last month we built our first dead hedge (our “cake for nature”), a living structure designed to feed and shelter wildlife, and we’ll be continuing that work, possibly starting a second one in the meadow. There may also be some gentle bramble clearing in the hazel copse for anyone who fancies it.

We’ll meet at the southern end of The Causeway (BN2 0FP) for a couple of hours. Please bring gloves and wear sturdy shoes, everything else is provided.

All welcome, hope to see you there!
