Blakers Park Clock Tower

Blakers Park Clock Tower The historic and iconic Clock Tower in Blakers Park, Brighton Our first target is £2500 to repair the clock mechanism. Thanks for your support!

The lovely Clock Tower in Blakers Park was gifted to the town in 1894 by Alderman John Blaker who gave £1000 for its construction. At fifty feet high the structure is made of steel, cast iron and bronze and finished with a dolphin weathervane. It was built by Gillett & Johnston in Croydon and the clock itself was formally started at 4pm on the afternoon of September 15th 1896. Its distinctive de

coration and delicate design add to its rarity as one of the few remaining Victorian clock towers still in its original park setting. But with a clock mechanism permanently stuck at 12:01 and its tower in need of important repair and maintenance, we are concerned for the future of this local icon. We are taking the lead in fundraising to repair the clock mechanism and restore the exterior, working in partnership with the City Council – who will continue to provide annual servicing and seasonal time changes to the clock.

Hooray! 🎉 We are delighted to announce that we have now met our fundraising targets to fix the clock and make repairs to the tower, thanks to the generous support of our wonderful neighbours, friends and local businesses.

The works we fundraised for over the last 18 months are now complete: the Victorian mechanism has been restored by the original makers Gillett & Johnston - Croydon Ltd, plus the base has been repainted, and the clock faces cleaned.

We have worked in close partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council, who will continue to provide annual servicing and seasonal time changes to the clock.

Having reached the targets, we have now closed our JustGiving donations page, but the story, updates and messages are still there to read https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/BlakersClock
