Brighton & Hove Street Outreach Service

Brighton & Hove Street Outreach Service Providing street outreach to those experiencing homelessness in Brighton & Hove. Connecting people with essential support services, shelter, and housing.

Submit referrals via Streetlink to help make a difference. Come rain or shine, every day at 6am our team sets out for our daily outreach shift in Brighton & Hove. Our role is to look for anyone who might be sleeping rough. Once verified as a rough sleeper we are then able to refer our clients into accommodation services. To improve our chance of finding rough sleepers, we also do several late shif

ts per week from 8-11pm. We then provide ongoing support to rough or ex-rough sleepers until they no longer need it. We work with many organisations across the city, such as AntiFreeze, First Base Day Centre, Brighton & Hove City Council, NSNO, OSO, CGL Recovery Services and the Mental Health Homeless Team - to name just a few. Our Reconnection Workers also work with organisations out of area to help clients find the most appropriate services available to them. Everything we do is done without judgement. Our aim is simply to support rough sleepers in achieving their goals. If you are concerned about a rough sleeper, please use Streetlink to inform us of their whereabouts and other important details which we can use to locate them. You can do this by downloading the app, going to their website (streetlink.org.uk), or calling them on 0300 500 0914. If you are unsure, please email us at [email protected]. This page is not monitored outside of office hours.

Other than Outreach, how do we support people who are rough sleeping in Brighton & Hove? It would be impossible for us to list all of the ways, so here's just a few!

๐Ÿ’™ Working between SOS and Brighton and Hove Recovery Service , our Co-Located Recovery Worker makes support and treatment for alcohol and substance misuse accessible for our clients.
๐Ÿค We canโ€™t do everything alone, so we work closely with a range of services and organisations, so our clients can access the right support, whenever they need it.
๐Ÿ  We want to set our clients up for success, so we work with them to build realistic, individual plans toward accommodation that meets their needs and circumstances.
๐Ÿ‘‚ We hear the people we work with, without judgement. No matter someone's past, present or future, we treat everyone with dignity, respect and compassion.
๐Ÿ”‘ Our Co-Located Homeless Prevention Officer builds a bridge between us and Brighton & Hove City Council, so that our clients can access suitable accommodation, quickly.
๐ŸŒ For those without connection to the city, our Reconnection Team supports people to safely reconnect with support networks and accommodation opportunities both nationally and internationally.

Early Wednesday morning, we began a new partnership with Thameslink and Brighton Station to help identify and support people who might be rough sleeping on the railways. For the next month, we'll be taking outreach shifts onto trains, aiming to connect with more people who may need our help. ๐Ÿš„

๐Ÿ  Homelessness isn't always visible. Some people spend their nights travelling on trains or staying in stations as a way of finding safety, warmth and shelter, especially if they may be more vulnerable on the streets. By working together with Thameslink, our team can reach people who might otherwise go unseen, offering support, guidance and a pathway towards accommodation, stability and better tomorrows. ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ’ฌ Want to know more about our new pilot project? Drop us a question in the comments, and we'll do our best to answer! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ˜Š

โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Weโ€™ve got another heatwave on our hands! ๐ŸŒก๏ธโ˜€๏ธ

Hot weather can be particularly challenging for people who are sleeping rough. Without reliable access to shade, drinking water or cool spaces, people are at a much higher risk of dehydration, sunburn and heat stroke . During periods of extreme heat, these risks can have serious consequences for health and wellbeing.

Our team will be out during the hottest parts of the day this week, providing support to anyone who might need it ๐Ÿค. But what can you do to help? Here are some simple ways to make a difference:

๐Ÿ‘‹ Say Hello! If you see someone sleeping rough, check in with them. How are they coping with the heat? Do they need anything?

๐Ÿ’ง Water! Offer water or a cold drink where you can, to help people stay hydrated.

๐Ÿงด Sunscreen! We know itโ€™s expensive, and weโ€™ll be handing out as much as we can. But if you have any spare, consider offering it to someone who may need it.

๐ŸŒณ Shade! Point people towards shaded areas or cool indoor spaces you know about. If those arenโ€™t available, hats ๐Ÿ‘’ or umbrellas โ˜‚๏ธ can help provide protection from the sun.

๐Ÿšจ Know the signs of heat stroke ๐ŸšจHeat-related illnesses can develop quickly and can be life-threatening. If you come across someone in the sun who:
๐Ÿ”ธ Seems confused or agitated
๐Ÿ”ธ Is having difficulty breathing
๐Ÿ”ธ Is unresponsive

๐Ÿ“ž Call 999 immediately. It could save someoneโ€™s life.

๐Ÿ“ And as always โ€“ StreetLink!

If you feel someone might benefit from our support, please send a referral through StreetLink so we can reach out and help: https://thestreetlink.org.uk/

Stay safe everyone! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿค

Happy Pride Month! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ๐Ÿณโ€๐ŸŒˆ

In a community like Brighton, we know all too well that LGBTQ+ people are at a higher risk of experiencing homelessness. Some studies suggest that up to 1 in 5 LGBTQ+ people have faced homelessness in their lifetime, rising to 1 in 4 for trans people.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and secure, and as a service we hope that none of our clients ever feel like their identity is a barrier to support from us. Thatโ€™s why we are committed each and every day to providing inclusive, respectful, and person-centred support to all that need it, no matter who they are. ๐Ÿ’›

Itโ€™s Volunteersโ€™ Week ๐Ÿ’™โœจ

This week weโ€™re celebrating the incredible people who volunteer with our service, we couldnโ€™t do this without them ๐Ÿ™Œ

In the past year alone, our volunteers have given nearly 300 hours of their time by supporting early morning outreach shifts, offering peer support in our accommodations, and so much more.

It takes a special kind of person with real dedication to join us on the streets of Brighton at 5:30am whilst most of the city is still asleep, giving their time, energy, and care to our clients before they even start their own day.

Thank you for everything you do! ๐Ÿ’™

Think volunteering with our service might be for you? ๐ŸŒŸDrop us a message with your name and email address ๐Ÿ“ฉ and weโ€™ll be in touch when we have opportunities available.

Can you help us? We're currently looking for donations for new residents in our accommodations. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ

Many people moving into our accommodation tell us that passing the time can feel difficult, especially after long periods of rough sleeping. Finding a meaningful use of time can make this transition smoother!

Weโ€™re currently looking for donations of:
๐Ÿ“บ A TV
๐ŸŽธ A guitar
๐Ÿ“ท A camera

These items can help our residents stay busy and lead to a better and brighter future! ๐ŸŒŸ

If you have any of these items going spare, please drop us a message we can arrange collection for when suits you. Thank you! ๐Ÿ™
