Hedgehogs are the UK’s only spiny mammal! These spines act as a valuable defence mechanism when evading predators. But can you guess on average how many spines a hedgehog has?
An adult male has a whopping total of 5000-7000 spines!

Welcome to Brighton Uni, who have joined in the fun!

We are very pleased to announce that the University of Brighton has signed up to a Hedgehog Friendly Campus with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society! These organisms play a vital and beautiful role in our ecosystems, but they need our help! Recent studies have shown a dramatic decrease in abundance of Hedgehogs! Our aim is to raise awareness about the challenges faced by hedgehogs and provide knowledge on how they can be accommodated for, with hopes of monitoring and improving their quality of life on our campuses.

Hedgehogs need your help! We are asking for students who would like to learn more and help with the campaign. The official launch will be following shortly, where you will find the official page with further information on roles, plans, activities and events!

If you are interested and would like more information or to join us, please contact us through our page or email.

Anyone planning on having a bonfire tomorrow please make sure you move your log pile to ensure there are no hedgehogs as every year they are injured or killed by bonfires. Since 2000 we have lost 50% of them, due to road traffic accidents, loss of habitats, plastic pollution and bonfires.

Sadly, the prints that had been thought to be hogs are not. But we have had many other visitors to our footprint tunnels such as these lovely wood mice that are happily eating the bait we left out. As we undertook this surveying late in the season this may explain why we did not find hog prints as many individuals may have started hibernation. We will undertake this again in the spring, so if anyone would be interested in helping with the survey please let us know. For now lets do our best to make the university campus as friendly as possible for all our furry and prickly friends!!!
