ARREST| Around midday today, officers from the Bridport Neighbourhood Policing Team issued a Section 35 dispersal notice to an individual in South Street, requiring them to leave Bridport town centre for a period 12 hours. This was due to anti-social behaviour, including shouting and swearing in the street, which was causing alarm and distress to members of the public, including families with children.
A Section 35 dispersal notice is a power available to police under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. It allows officers to direct individuals to leave an area for up to 48 hours where their behaviour is contributing to harassment, alarm or distress, helping us to quickly address issues and protect the community.
Despite this direction, the individual failed to comply and was later located on East Street that same afternoon. As a result, they were arrested by the Bridport Neighbourhood Policing Team and taken to Weymouth Custody, where they will be charged to court.
We understand the impact that anti-social behaviour can have on our communities and will continue to take proactive action to keep Bridport a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
If you experience or witness anti-social behaviour, please report it to us.
