ARREST| Around midday today, officers from the Bridport Neighbourhood Policing Team issued a Section 35 dispersal notice to an individual in South Street, requiring them to leave Bridport town centre for a period 12 hours. This was due to anti-social behaviour, including shouting and swearing in the street, which was causing alarm and distress to members of the public, including families with children.

A Section 35 dispersal notice is a power available to police under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. It allows officers to direct individuals to leave an area for up to 48 hours where their behaviour is contributing to harassment, alarm or distress, helping us to quickly address issues and protect the community.

Despite this direction, the individual failed to comply and was later located on East Street that same afternoon. As a result, they were arrested by the Bridport Neighbourhood Policing Team and taken to Weymouth Custody, where they will be charged to court.

We understand the impact that anti-social behaviour can have on our communities and will continue to take proactive action to keep Bridport a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

If you experience or witness anti-social behaviour, please report it to us.

Working Together to Keep Our Communities Safe

Dorset Police have been working in partnership with Magna Housing to support the civil proceedings of an immediate repossession of a property due to ongoing issues including anti-social behaviour, squatting, and concerns around drug use.

We understand that actions like this are not taken lightly, and it is never our intention to make individuals homeless. However, we have a clear duty of care to protect the wider community—including neighbouring residents who have been impacted.

Kerry Starling, Magna's Head of Customer Contact and Community Support, said: "We're pleased to have worked in partnership with Dorset Police to bring a stop to ongoing antisocial behaviour and criminality at this address, which had caused years of misery to neighbouring residents. It's an example of how working together can have a positive impact on safety in our local communities.

We would like to thank members of the public for your continued support, patience, and the valuable information you provide. Your reports and intelligence play a vital role in helping us take action and maintain safe neighbourhoods.

If you have concerns in your area, please continue to report them—together, we can make a difference.

We’re aware of a recent increase in shoplifting across Bridport and are working closely with local businesses to tackle the issue.

Our Bridport Neighbourhood Policing Team has been visiting retailers to offer crime prevention advice, share tips on spotting suspicious behaviour, and explain how we deal with these offences. We’re also encouraging businesses to keep reporting every incident – no matter how small – as this helps us build a full picture and take action where it’s needed most.

You may have seen an increased police presence in the town centre recently. We have stepped up both high-visibility patrols and plain-clothes operations to target offenders. These proactive efforts are already leading to arrests, and this work will continue.
