Tonight’s training focused on refreshing our crews’ knowledge and skills when working at height.

Using the equipment carried on our appliances, firefighters identified and demonstrated suitable anchor points, making use of both man-made and natural features where appropriate. Crews then practised the safe use of work restraint and fall arrest systems before moving on to casualty rescue techniques.

The session concluded with the use of a working at height harness and casualty rescue sling to stabilise and assist a casualty back to a place of safety.

Training like this helps ensure our crews remain competent, confident, and ready to respond safely and effectively whenever they’re needed. 🚒🪢

Bridport’s second crew and two crews from Dorchester Fire Station were mobilised to a property fire on Crock Lane after a resident returned home and heard smoke alarms sounding in a neighbouring property.

On arrival, crews found the property locked and unoccupied, with smoke visible inside the building.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were deployed with a hose reel jet and gained entry to the property. Once inside, they discovered that towels had been accidentally left on a hot hob, causing a fire.

Fortunately, the property was fitted with working smoke alarms, which alerted nearby residents and prompted a swift call to the fire service. This early warning enabled crews to respond quickly, contain the fire, and minimise damage to the property.

Fire safety reminders:
• Keep your cooking area clean and tidy.
• Never place combustible items on or near your hob, even if you believe it is switched off or cold.
• Ensure you have working smoke alarms installed and test them regularly.

🔥 Fire In The Open

Crews were called to a bonfire that had become out of control. The owner had a hose pipe ready in case the fire spread, however, due to the size of the fire the garden hose was not sufficient enough to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters used an extended hose reel to fully extinguish the fire.

Advice was given regarding size, location and having bonfires in hot dry conditions.

⚠️Bonfire Safety Advice⚠️

Bonfires are common during the warmer months, but they can quickly become dangerous if not managed safely. If you’re planning to burn garden waste, please follow this advice:

* Site bonfires well away from buildings, fences, trees and garden structures.
* Always keep a garden hose or water supply nearby.
* Never light a bonfire on a windy day, as flames can spread rapidly.
* Be considerate to neighbours — if you’re planning a substantial bonfire, let them know beforehand.
* Never leave a bonfire unattended.
* If you are planning a large bonfire, use our online notification form. This helps prevent unnecessary emergency calls from members of the public reporting smoke.
* Never use flammable liquids such as petrol or paraffin to start or encourage a fire
