National Trust Coleridge Cottage Home to Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge for three extraordinary years, now an interactive and informative experience for the whole family

A major re-presentation project in 2011 transformed Coleridge Cottage into the home Samuel Taylor Coleridge might have known, with the original 18th century rooms dressed as though the Coleridge family had just walked out of them. It was during his time in Somerset that Coleridge wrote his finest work, including 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', 'Frost at Midnight' and Kubla Khan. This house has had a varied history, from its humble beginnings as a Georgian cottage to a Victorian Inn, before it was acquired for the National Trust in 1909, today you can hear, feel, see and touch his poetry as well as have a go at writing with a quill and bring out your very own inner poet!

September has arrived and there are already little signs of autumn appearing around Coleridge Cottage. These little orange beauties are serving peak autumn energy despite it still feeling a bit like summer outside! ☀️🎃

Join us on Wednesday 2nd September for a FREE guided walk along the route regularly enjoyed by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth and Dorothy Wordsworth.

Take in breathtaking panoramic views, discover local wildlife and explore the landscapes that inspired some of England's most celebrated poetry. Along the way, you'll visit Alfoxton, where the Wordsworths once lived, and follow the path they took to Coleridge Cottage.

Join our volunteer walk leaders on a ramble between Kilve, Alfoxton and Nether Stowey, taking in panoramic views, spotting local wildlife, and exploring the landscapes that inspired Coleridge and Wordsworth.

Along the way, discover where the Wordsworths lived during their time in the area and follow part of the route they took to visit Coleridge Cottage.

📜 A familiar feeling from 233 years ago...

On this day in 1793, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote anxiously to his brother George, convinced that a lack of letters could only mean one thing- he was in trouble.

''My dear Brother, —Since my arrival in the country I have been anxiously expecting a letter from you, nor can I divine the reason of your silence. [...] I am fearful that your silence proceeds from displeasure. If so, what is left for me to do but to grieve? The past is not in my power. For the follies of which I may have been guilty, I have been greatly disgusted; and I trust the memory of them will operate to future consistency of conduct.'

Some things never change. Today we have unread messages, blue ticks and ghosting. In 1793, you simply waited anxiously for the post coach! 👀🫖
