Friends Of Monze

Friends Of Monze Charity based in Wales and working in the Monze district in Zambia to improve education and health.

Many children in Monze, Zambia, have low educational attainment, many are orphans, poor and vulnerable. To help improve children's education and health we have built 10 schools. We equip schools with desks, books, solar power, laptops and sports equipment. We establish school permaculture gardens growing food for the children and teaching the community. We improve health by drilling bore holes pro

viding water for drinking, hygiene, and gardens. To keep girls in school we teach menstrual hygiene and women's rights. All our work is in partnership with Monze based NGO, Zambian Women and Girls Foundation.

Malimba School is located in Monze District, Zambia. In 2018, we constructed three new classrooms and supplied desks, books, and the Happy Readers reading scheme to support children's learning. By 2025, 565 students aged 5 to 14 and older were attending Malimba School. The Monze Department of Education deploys teachers to rural schools like Malimba. To ensure that teachers and their families have comfortable living arrangements near the school, we constructed two houses at Malimba School. Schools in Zambia are set to reopen soon for the start of the new academic year, and we wish them a successful year ahead.

The wind can really do some damage in Zambia; it took the roof right off two classrooms at Malama School in Monze District.

The children were trying to learn sitting in classrooms with the hot sun almost overhead, and the rainy season is approaching. The all-important Grade 7 and Grade 9 exams could not take place in classrooms with no roof and teachers were concerned children would have to walk 45 minutes in the heat, to take exams in an unfamiliar school.

They asked our partners in Monze for help roofing the classrooms. Fortunately, the builder and his team were able to get the roof on just in time for children to start their exams this week. We will put the finishing touches to the building when exams are over.

Friends of Monze has nearly completed building new classrooms at Hamunyagwa School. The school will also need books so we donated money to buy Zambia school curriculum text books. And since we want to encourage children to enjoy reading, we also gave story books for the children to read for fun.

Lumba Moonys School is in a rural area of Monze District. Friends of Monze fenced a large garden and provided a solar powered water pump so the school could grow fruit and vegetables. The teachers, children and community members all help in the garden. The children in the pictures are enjoying a school grown meal of ground maize flour, called "nshima", and vegetables.

This is Singonya School. Friends of Monze built 3 new classrooms at Singonya school in 2024. The pupils are from 5 year olds to Grade 9, 16 years and older. They did not have enough desks for the new classrooms, so children were just sitting on the floor. Imagine how difficult it is to learn to write when you are sitting on the floor. Friends of Monze had 30 new desks made by carpenters in Monze town. We made 2 new bookcases as well. The desks in the photo outside the classroom had just been delivered, they will soon be in use making learning easier and more comfortable for pupils.

In rural Zambia, cooking is traditionally done over an open fire using a pot balanced on 3 stones. This uses a large amount of firewood, leading to deforestation which in turn leads to fewer trees to funnel rainwater underground and hold topsoil preventing it being washed away.

Friends of Monze partners have been teaching villagers at Singonya to make rocket stoves which use less firewood, so fewer trees will be cut down and less time spent collecting firewood.

Cooking on open fires is a danger to small children who may suffer burns from falling onto the fire or cooking opt. Rocket stoves are safer.

We built demonstration cookers at Singonya School kitchen and at the home of Singonya Headman.

Members of the local community take part in the gardening training, planning the school grounds.

The 5 days gardening training is taught by our partners Zambia Women and Girls Foundation. 40 people attended the training including children, teachers, village Headmen and farmers.

The aim of the school gardens is to provide a variety of food for the children; generate income by selling garden produce to buy books, chalk etc.; for the school and local community to experiment and learn how to grow food using homemade fertiliser and drought resistant crops to combat climate change.

This lady farmer attended the 5 days gardening training at Hambalamatu school. She learned how covering the ground keeps the ground from drying in the hot Zambian sun. She put the new knowledge about mulching into practice on her own crops.

Our partners delivered a 5 days permaculture gardening training. The photo shows an "A" frame made so when the stone on a piece of string hangs from the top of the A over the marked middle of the cross bar, then the 2 "feet of the A are level. This device is used to find level ground. Deep drainage ditches are then dug along the contour lines to harvest precious rainwater, thus raising the underground water table preventing wells and boreholes drying up. You can see how dry the land is now in the dry season, we are helping combat drought caused by climate change.

Hambalamatu School had only one classroom and home made benches, Children had to finish school at 8 years old.

In July 2024, the local villagers had moulded and fired bricks, this shows they value education and wanted a school for their children.

Women hand pumped water and carried it to the building site to help build the new classrooms at Hambalamatu.

We donated desks so children can learn to write comfortably. We also gave Hambalamatu school Zambian curriculum books for lessons and story books to enjoy reading.
