House Rules

We use social media as an additional means to engage with our communities. We want to keep you, our followers, informed of what’s happening in your area and provide you with crime prevention advice. We also know that you can be invaluable in assisting us with appeals for information. We want our social media accounts to be safe spaces for all who use them, so we ask that all followers

adhere to our House Rules. We reserve the right to hide or delete comments or block users who break these House Rules.

1. Reporting

This is really important. Public comments on our posts are not moderated 24/7, and are not monitored by our control room; if you want to report a crime or provide information in response to an appeal via social media, this MUST be done via our website or by calling 101. In an emergency, always dial 999. If you come across something you think breaks a social media platform’s terms and conditions, you should report it to that platform. If you think a crime is being committed online, you should report it to us on our website or via 101. Contact 999 only in an emergency. Please don’t post links to unlawful material in a public comment.

2. Posting on our accounts

Remember everything you say on our social media accounts is public. You are legally responsible for what you say and post on our pages. We do have the ability to disable comments but we prefer to do this as a last resort or when we judge there is a need to do so, for example in order to protect the integrity of investigations. Our social media was always intended to allow a two-way dialogue between us and our followers and we want to restrict this as little as possible. With that in mind do not post content which is:

β€’ Abusive (including expletives)
β€’ Defamatory
β€’ Hateful
β€’ Racially offensive
β€’ Sexually offensive
β€’ Obscene
β€’ Threatening
β€’ Inflammatory
β€’ Unlawful (for example comments which could prejudice a trial or content which you don’t own the copyright to)
β€’ Spam or unrelated to the post
β€’ Includes sensitive information, such as your own, or someone else’s personal details
β€’ Includes links to any material containing any of the above

Comments are moderated, although this is not on a 24/7 basis; in addition, due to the volume of public comments received, we don’t always see them straight away. However, we do reserve the right to delete or hide comments, or block any users, that breach these guidelines, without explanation, and to change our guidelines at any time and without notice. For those comments/users which may cross the criminal threshold, we will also seek to prosecute if necessary.

3. Complaints

If you want to make a complaint against South Wales Police or one of its officers/members of staff, you can do so on our website: https://www.south-wales.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/c/af/complaints/

This weekend is set to bring warmer weather and sunshine to much of the UK. As temperatures rise and people head outdoors, it's vital to stay aware of water safety risks.

Understand the risks
β€’ Warm weather does not mean warm water
β€’ Open water remains dangerously cold
β€’ Cold water shock happens in seconds - take it seriously
β€’ It can cause an uncontrollable gasp and loss of breathing control

Know your limits
β€’ Even confident swimmers can quickly lose strength and control
β€’ It can become difficult to move or stay afloat
β€’ Panic can make the situation worse
β€’ Things can go wrong very quickly in open water

Take 5 minutes to brush up on your Water Safety Code before you head out this weekend. Download the Water Safety Code at www.rlss.org.uk/water-safety-code

Staff on our Safety Bus have helped save the life of a man in cardiac arrest in Cardiff city centre. 🚨

The Safety Bus happened to be nearby when a call came into the control room for assistance during the early hours of Saturday, May 30.

A 36-year-old man was found collapsed and unresponsive on St Mary Street.

A police officer commenced CPR, and two police student volunteers applied a defibrillator which is kept on the bus, until an ambulance arrived.

Fortunately, the man became responsive, started talking, and was taken to hospital.

πŸ‘‰ The Cardiff Safety Buses patrol the city centre on Wednesday nights during academic semesters, and on Friday and Saturday nights year-round.

They are operated by officers and volunteers to help anyone who may be vulnerable and are not restricted solely to students.

βœ… The initiative has helped ensure thousands of people who have found themselves in a vulnerable position or where their personal safety was at risk, have been taken to their homes or another place of safety, such as the Alcohol Treatment Centre.

*Double checks forecast* 😎 It looks as if summer is showing its face again this weekend...

Whatever your plans, please stay safe and look out for yourselves and others. As always, if you're off to an organised event over the weekend and into next week – including Pride Cymru in Cardiff as well as the Take That gig – our advice is simple:

❗ Be patient with security checks and staff
πŸ”Š Report to security if you see something that doesn’t feel right
πŸ”„ Share the message
πŸ™Œ Enjoy the event!

Driving? 🚧 Cardiff city centre will be busy tomorrow, and there will be road closures in place.

'Sextortion' is a type of online blackmail. It's when criminals threaten to share sexual content or information about you unless you pay money or do something else you don’t want to.

⚠️ Anyone can be a victim of sextortion, and sadly, our teams have seen an increase in cases of sextortion, where fraudsters are convincing their victims to innocently send ordinary images of themselves via private message, having gained their trust over dating apps. πŸ“±

Fraudsters then manipulate the images using AI to create explicit content of their victims.

If you are a victim of sextortion, or worried you are being targeted, it's never your fault. You are not to blame and have done nothing wrong.

A summer of international football is upon us and with that we'll be supporting selected licensed premises offering free or discounted soft drinks to designated drivers as part of our β€˜DES’ scheme. ⚽ πŸ†

πŸ‘‰ So far over 30 licensed premises have signed up and will kick-off the scheme on Thursday, June 11 before blowing the final whistle on Sunday, July 19.

A designated driver is someone who abstains from drinking alcohol to act as the responsible driver for themselves and others and the aim of β€˜DES’ is to promote responsible drinking with road safety in mind.

Getting involved is an open goal. If you are the designated driver and find yourself at one of the selected licensed premises to watch a game, all you have to do is make yourself known to bar staff.

In return, they will give you a β€˜DES’ wristband enabling you to claim free or discounted draught soft drinks or squash. πŸ₯€

We're so sorry to hear this devastating news. Rest in peace, Jess. πŸ’™

A police officer has tragically died in the line of duty after a collision in Northumberland.

PC Jess Turnbull was responding to a collision which occurred on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington at about 11.10pm on Monday.

While at the scene, she was outside of a marked police vehicle when she was struck by a black Mercedes CLC which was unconnected to the original incident.

Jess was taken to hospital where yesterday, surrounded by her loved ones, she sadly died.

Jess, who was 19, joined the Force in September last year and worked on the response policing team in Northumberland.

Our thoughts very much remain with her family and those impacted by this devastating loss.

If you would like to leave a written tribute to Jess, you can do so by leaving a comment below.

β˜” It might have taken until Thursday to dry off, but it was worth it!

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Family Fun Day at the weekend.

It was great to see so many people enjoying the activities, meeting teams from across the force and spending time together.

The weather might not have got the memo, but it didn’t stop people turning out and making it a brilliant day.

A huge thank you to everyone who organised the event and to all of you who came along and supported it. πŸ’™
