Shaun will make an outstanding BCBC councillor as he’s demonstrated by his leadership of St Brides Minor community council over the last two terms.

This morning I spoke in BCBC’s Development Control committee against the proposed container storage facility on Wyndham Close.

Neighbouring houses had a number of concerns about the impact of this development which I don’t feel will be properly addressed through the proposed mitigation.

However, my primary concern is that this land is designated in the Local Development Plan (LDP) as ‘COM11’ which means the land should be protected as ‘Accessible Natural & Semi Natural Greenspace’.

Our LDP was approved in 2024 and the three Coity Higher councillors supported it on the basis that whilst it wasn’t perfect it did, on the face of it, protect Coity Higher from further significant development.

There needs to be a very good reason to depart from the LDP and in my view the creation of a single job isn’t enough.

It is therefore extremely disappointing that the committee agreed with officers recommendations to approve the development.

Although in Coity Higher this area is very much associated with Brackla Ridge and is held in much affection by many Brackla residents. Given that, it’s extremely surprising that the three Brackla councillors on the development control committee voted to ignore the green space designation and vote in favour of this application.

I accept that there will be instances where the land designation in the LDP may be incorrect or may require change due to evolving circumstances but this needs to be done in a controlled manner and approved by full council. I am aware of other applications that should be refused on the same basis and fear that this creates a very worrying precedent.
