Heading out for a walk or run near water? Take a moment for safety.
Spending time by rivers, lakes or the coast is a great way to unwind – but in Wales, more people drown after accidentally falling into water than during any planned activity.
Here’s how to stay safe:
• Check the weather forecasts for your area
• Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back
• Carry a mobile phone so you can call for help.
• Take note of warning signs
• Always supervise children near water
• Keep a safe distance from the edge — especially in wet or windy conditions
If you fall in unexpectedly, remember:
Tilt your head back, submerging your ears
Relax and control your breathing
Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
Your legs may sink – that’s OK everyone floats differently
Practice floating at a supervised location like a swimming pool.
If someone else is in trouble:
Phone 999 to get help
Tell them to stay calm and float on their back
Throw rescue equipment to help them float until emergency services arrive.
If you’re at the coast:
Beware of large waves which can sweep you off your feet and out to sea
Make sure you don’t get cut-off by the tide, check tide times for your location

Always take coastal walks when the tide is going out, rather than coming in.
Let’s enjoy the outdoors safely.
