📢 Flood Risk Update for Cumbria from the Environment Agency - 8th December
We are expecting strong winds and heavy rain associated with Storm Bram to affect Cumbria and surrounding areas throughout Tuesday 9 December. This may bring some flooding and travel disruption.
The forecast indicates that 40-50mm of rain is expected to fall between midnight tonight and midday tomorrow (Tuesday) on low lying ground, with up to 80mm of rainfall on higher ground. With the ground already saturated in most areas there is the possibility that we may issue a number of flood alerts and flood warnings during this period. We are also monitoring coastal flood risk, with potential surge conditions caused by low pressure and strong winds.
In Cumbria, there are currently 4 flood alerts and 1 flood warning in place. Information on the latest flood alerts and warnings is available online.
We are monitoring river levels closely and working with local authorities and partners to reduce the impacts of the heavy rain. Our teams are out on the ground working 24/7 clearing grids, checking defences and making sure our pumping stations are working. We are ready and prepared to respond to any flooding incidents.
We advise people to stay away from swollen rivers and not to drive through flood water as just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move a car.
