RNAD Broughton Moor 📌 🌎

The depot was opened in 1939 on the site of Buckhill, In 1944 the site was expanded from 800 to 1050 acres.

The depot continued to be used by the Ministry of Defence until 1963, at which point it was leased to the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1977 it was used by the United States Navy for storage of armaments for its North Atlantic Squadron (the weapons were flown out of the site by helicopters shuttling back and forth over a number of days to a USN Cargo Ship lying offshore and away from the town's harbour of Workington); and from 1981 Broughton Moor was formally adopted as a NATO storage site.

The site was decommissioned at the end of the Cold War, finally closing on 31 December 1992.

History 🕵️‍♂️
Once Considered The Largest Linen-Thread Manufacturer In The World in the 1900s.
John Barbour moved from Scotland to Co. Down, Ireland in 1784 to establish a linen- thread making business at the Plantation, Lisburn. The Barbour’s Mill was transferred to the Hilden site after John Barbour’s death in 1823 by his son William. It became one of the first water powered mills on the river Lagan.
By 1890 the mill was noted to have the following: 30,000 spindles, 8000 twisting machines. And used up to 200 tons of coal per week, and around 100 tons of fax and toe.

By the end of the 19th century, William Barbour’s mill at Hilden was considered the largest linen-thread manufacturer in the world. In 1898 the Irish, Scottish and American Barbour companies were merged into the Linen Thread Co, Ltd. When war broke out in 1914, around 2000 people were employed at the Hilden Mill and with their help the mill produced linen thread that was used to stitch war-time parachutes, uniforms, boots and knapsacks for the First World War.

🗣 What an incredible building, you almost have to see it to believe it. The natural decay caused by the Atlantic see is unmatched in anything I've seen before. It felt like I was walking through an apocalypse... nature really has taken over.
Nestled on a beautiful beach facing the Bad Eddie shipwreck you can see why this place was once such a popular resort.

History 📜
A 32-bedroom hotel which was a favourite haunt of football legend George Best is to be auctioned with a reserve price of just €590,000. Receivers acting on behalf of the banks are selling Ostan Gweedore, which overlooks a famous beach along Donegal's Wild Atlantic Way.

The hotel was owned by the local Boyle family, whose cousin Pat Crerand played alongside Best in Manchester United's European Cup-winning team of 1968.
Crerand and Best were regular visitors to the west Donegal hotel in the 1970s and 1980s.Best once described the area as "the most beautiful place on Earth".

In 2016 the hotel was put for acution for €590,000 and believed to have sold however has sat decaying since 2008 in which it originally closed.

The Legend of Devil’s Bridge and the old wise lady 🌁👿

There are several legends surrounding the construction of this 2000 year old aqueduct and how it got it’s diabolical name.

Many years ago, there was an elderly couple who lived in the forest near Tarragona (Barcelona). Each day they loaded their donkey with products to sell at the market in a nearby village. The road to the village crossed an old wooden bridge over a deep river.Unfortunately, one day there was a bad storm and floodwaters washed the old wooden bridge away. The next day when the couple found that they couldn’t cross the river the old man said:

“What a disaster, we can’t get to market and I’m too old to build a new bridge”.

The couple were still discussing their misfortune when a strange looking man appeared out of nowhere. When the old man explained what had happened, the stranger said:

“Don’t worry , tonight I’ll build you a new bridge and I’ll make it out of stone to ensure that it can’t be washed away.”

“What shall we do” said the old man to his wife “The only way he could possibly build the bridge in one night is by using some kind of magic”

When the old man asked what the bridge would cost and under what conditions the mysterious stranger replied:

“I’ll build the bridge for free in return for the soul of the first to cross the bridge”

At this point it became clear that the mysterious stranger was in fact the devil.

The old woman thought for a moment before accepting the devil’s offer.

The next morning, when the elderly couple arrived at the river, they found a large stone bridge and the devil awaiting his payment.

“What should we do now dear?” The old man asked his wife.

The old woman turned and slapped the donkey’s hindquarters so that it trotted over the bridge…

History

A testament to Roman engineering, the 249m long aqueduct continued to bring water to Tarragona until as recently as the 18th century.

Reformatory School abandoned since 1991 🚷

Reformatory School for Boys opened in 1858 in quite a rural area. This was because the Victorians felt that cities were dangerous places, full of bad influences, and that being out in the countryside would encourage children to be well behaved and to work hard

The school had a shoemaker’s shop, a joiner’s shop, a smith’s shop and a gas house, as well as a number of farmyard animals. The school also had three acres of land set aside for growing crops. The school had its own band, as well as football and gymnastics teams. The Reformatory was unusual in that it also had its own swimming pool, which was built in 1888. The Victorians thought taking part in sports taught young children good moral values. A number of boys who left the school were apprenticed on fishing boats at Grimsby, so the school also felt that knowing how to swim would come in handy.

Access isn't easy at all, although this place is mind blowing and definitely worth it. 🤯 The school has been left Urbandoned for over 20 years so there's little surprise nothing truly remains. However once your in that courtyard surrounded by history its easy to forget what this place was used as. Every room is accessible and its 20 year demise its hard to differentiate whats what. T he history of this place since 1857 is massive and I can only assume back then it wasn't a very nice.

🙏My interactions and post views have been through the roof 🚀 recently so thank you 😊

This one was pure chance of a hit, i went out to visit a abandoned house i spotted on google maps and ended-up in this great big thing. With no torch 🔦⛔ Some of the photos show the darkness I was seeing 🤣🙏 From the information I've gathered/seen i think this particular part was the offices & canteen and the patients wards have been redeveloped.

History 📜
The site has a long history and was the one-time residence of Lord Dungannon, the Bishop of Down and the Batt family. The last private tenant was Sir James Johnston, the Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1917-18.

The oldest sections of the hospital dates back to 1906, when it was primarily used to treat fever. It later became a cancer treatment centre,. In 1983, the hospital was the first in the province to take delivery of a CT scanner. until it was eventually closed in 2006.

After services had been transferred to Belfast City Hospital, the hospital closed in March 2006. In June 2014 the site was sold to a private developer known as the Neptune Group. Neptune Group have since restored some of the original buildings to function as modern townhouses, and the first showhomes were opened in June 2017.

🔊 There's something so spooky about being in a abandoned church, just me and the pigeons. Considering how long this has been derelict I was surprised with the condition, the mosaic tiles and spiral staircase was a welcome surprise.

Couldn't find too much history or any old photos probably due to when it was last used.

History 📜
HRC has been vacant and derelict for over 40 years. It opened in 1898 to cater for a growing Catholic population in the area.Having served the people of Ballynafeigh and Rosetta for more than 80 years, it eventually became too small and in 1980 its congregation moved across the road to a bigger church in the Good Shepherd.

Keighley gets alot of bad publicity nowadays, but its not difficult to see the INCREDIBLE victoria heritage keighley has. (Particularly the infrastructure on Cavendish Street, North Street, the parks, the library, Cliffe Castle etc etc)

Dalton Mill was instrumental to it all.

Ultimately this was inevitable, following the recent trends of Bradford and even Haworth, nevertheless its a incredible sad day for our town.

Just had a quick look at my saved files and I have got some film footage from within .

Havnt had time to look to into it yet, but ill hopefully be able to put together a video and hopefully show you what a magnificent building this was.
