As the profits of billionaires, bosses and bankers continue to rise, the working class is being squeezed by falling wages and a cost of living catastrophe.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson and the Tory government stumble from one scandal to the next, all while siphoning off money to their big business pals - and offering nothing for ordinary working people.

The Trades Union Congress have organised a national demo on 18 June, which will see thousands of trade unionists and activists from across the country descend on London and march to Parliament Square to express their anger at this crisis - a crisis of the capitalist system.

But this must be the opening shot of a general offensive. The ‘new deal’ required for the working class is a bold socialist programme to solve the problems facing ordinary people.

This should include demands for nationalisation – without compensation – of the 100 biggest monopolies, banks, and insurance companies and placing these under workers’ control, as part of a socialist economic plan.

Coordinated, united action must be built for and launched across the union movement in order to fight for such a programme: to bring down this rotten Tory government; to bring down capitalism; and to bring the working class to power.

This is what Socialist Appeal - the Marxist voice of workers and youth - are fighting for, and these are the demands we will be raising at the TUC demo.

10 comrades out in Leeds today in support of the ongoing occupation of the Ziff building. We handed out flyers, got involved in discussions and 2 of us spoke at the rally.

May Day, also known as International Workers' Day, was established in 1889 by the Second International, in commemoration of the fight for the 8-hour working day by the American labour movement.

133 years later, workers across the world are still fighting the same battles: against poverty pay; against long hours and injurious conditions; and for decent, secure jobs.

Already, as inflation bites and bosses step up their attacks, workers in the UK are "rising like lions from their slumber". New layers are being drawn into struggle to defend their lives and livelihoods. This is leading to a process of transformation within the unions.

The task ahead is to complete this transformation: to forge a Marxist leadership in the trade union movement - armed with a socialist programme - that can mobilise workers for a militant fightback against the Tories and the bosses.

As Lenin remarked: "Let us then prepare with redoubled energy for the decisive battle that is at hand!... Let the celebration of May Day win thousands of new fighters to our cause and swell our forces in the great struggle for the freedom of all the people, for the liberation of all who toil from the yoke of capital!"

Day 2 of the 30th anniversary paper campaign in Leeds this time in the city centre. 5 comrades (including a visitor from Lancaster branch) sold 10 papers and a pamphlet, collected £1 in donations and signed up 4 contacts.
The sale was quite eventful with some comrades helping a stroke victim by calling an ambulance and waiting with them till help arrived!
