SHOCKING: LABOUR SNEAKING “COUNCIL OF SANCTUARY” THROUGH THE BACK DOOR IN BRACKNELL!

While our council is £5 MILLION overspent, services are stretched, and residents are demanding action on the basics… Labour’s minority administration is trying to quietly brand Bracknell Forest a “Council of Sanctuary” without asking you.

They’re burying it in the small print of a bland strategy document and planning to rubber-stamp it as a cabinet “decision” in late June. No full council debate. No public consultation. No mandate.

This voluntary badge would force us to:

Waste time and public money on awareness campaigns, staff training and a public “celebration” event

Send a clear signal to Government that Bracknell is open for large-scale asylum seeker and refugee resettlement

We’ve already done our bit. Our community's have warmly welcomed Ukrainian refugees, Hong Kong British Nationals and the Nepalese community for years. Real compassion. Real action. No badge required.

But declaring “Council of Sanctuary” is virtue signalling of the worst kind. It risks opening the floodgates while our housing, schools, GP surgeries and local services are already under massive pressure.

Cllr Gareth Barnard wrote to Labour Leader Helen Purnell raising serious concerns. Her response? She “noted” them… and admited she hadn’t even been briefed yet.

This is a serious failure of leadership.

Conservatives voted against this at Full Council in April. We’re demanding a full public debate and open vote, not decisions smuggled through in the small print.

Read the full press release, the letter we sent to Cllr Helen Purnell, and a plain-English explanation of what “Council of Sanctuary” actually means here:

While some people sit behind screens, pretending to “listen to residents” and generating pretty AI pictures to pass off as local…

Conservatives are out there putting in the real work.

We are...

Hitting the streets.
Taking actual photos of real problems.
Reporting them to the people who can actually do something about it.

It might not look as polished or “aesthetic” as an AI image, but guess what... it’s real. It shows what is actually happening in our communities and it forces accountability, instead of just creating likes.

We don’t need more virtual signaling.

We need more people willing to slip on their shoes and do the legwork.

In 2022, under Conservative leadership, Bracknell Forest’s Children’s Services earned the top Outstanding rating from Ofsted.

This success came from years of investment, stable leadership and a genuine commitment to putting children and families first. High standards like this take time, focus and real dedication... and they didn’t suddenly disappear the moment Labour took over.

We were open about the challenges with SEND. That’s why the work to turn things around started under us in July 2022, with the Written Statement of Action, a new SEND Strategy, expanded specialist places and a proper recovery plan for the High Needs Block deficit.

Former Bracknell Conservative MP James Sunderland played a key role in securing vital extra national funding, including £16 million in Safety Valve support from the Department for Education and funding for the new specialist SEND school in Crowthorne. These investments directly backed our local recovery plan and expanded specialist provision for children with additional needs.

This was all part of our wider 26-year record of stable, high-performing local government that left the council in strong shape.

We’re proud of what we delivered for local families and we will be fighting hard in 2027 to win back control and getting things done properly for residents.

The Lexicon wasn't a happy accident.

The transformation of Bracknell town center took years of planning, investment, negotiation and political courage. Residents enjoy it every day because Conservative administrations pushed it through when others doubted it could be done.

Major regeneration requires vision, long-term commitment and the willingness to make tough decisions. That’s exactly what Bracknell Conservatives delivered.

This was part of the wider 26-year record of stable, high-performing local government that left the council in strong shape.

We’re proud of what we built and we will be fighting hard in 2027 to win back control... getting things done for residents.

Reform UK Bracknell... Stop rewriting history to fit your narrative.

For 26 years (1998–2023) Bracknell Forest was run by Conservative councillors who delivered stable, prudent, high-performing local government.

We did not leave behind a broken council. We left one of the strongest-performing unitary authorities in the country... with rock-solid finances, major regeneration delivered, high-performing services, and council tax consistently kept among the lowest 10% of any unitary authority in England.

✅ Consistent budget delivery, year after year
✅ Healthy reserves built up and maintained
✅ Council tax kept genuinely low while still protecting frontline services

Guess what... this wasn’t by accident. It was the result of careful financial management, living within our means, and always putting Bracknell Forest residents first.

We are proud of Bracknell’s record and we will be fighting hard in 2027 to win back control, so we can once again offer residents responsible finances, low taxes and strong delivery for everyone.
