Earlier this week, we were called out to The River Dart alongside Ashburton Fire Station and specialist rescue teams from Camels Head due to reports of a person in difficulty in the water.
Thankfully, the casualty was located next to the water and was assisted to safety by crews before being taken to hospital for treatment.
During the recent heatwave, 15 people have lost their lives after entering the water. We realise the temptation to cool off during this hot weather, but the hidden dangers in the water cannot be under estimated.
If you find yourself in trouble in the water, Float to live.
Tilt your head back with your ears submerged.
Relax and try to breathe normally.
Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat.
It’s OK if your legs sink; we all float differently.
Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.
If you see someone else in trouble in the water this summer, remember: Phone, Float, Throw.
Phone 999 to get help.
Tell the person to stay calm and float on their back.
Throw rescue equipment to help them float until emergency services arrive. Do not enter the water.
We encourage all our community and followers to stay safe when in or around water.
