๐Ÿšฉ ASSESSORS: Would these raise a red flag for you?

Making an assessment decision isn't simply about whether evidence has been submitted. As an assessor, you need to be confident that the evidence genuinely demonstrates the learner's competence.

Here are 5 things that might make you stop and take a closer look:

๐Ÿšฉ 1. Several learners submit remarkably similar answers
Similar wording, examples or structure could warrant a closer look at authenticity.

๐Ÿšฉ 2. The learner's work suddenly changes dramatically
A noticeable change in writing style, terminology or level of knowledge may be something worth exploring further.

๐Ÿšฉ 3. Evidence doesn't match what you've seen from the learner
If submitted evidence demonstrates a level of competence inconsistent with observations or discussions, further assessment may be appropriate.

๐Ÿšฉ 4. A witness testimony is vague
"Yes, they can do this" doesn't necessarily demonstrate how, when or to what standard the learner performed the task.

๐Ÿšฉ 5. There's plenty of evidenceโ€ฆ but it doesn't actually meet the criteria
Quantity doesn't equal quality. Evidence still needs to be relevant to what is being assessed.

โš ๏ธ Remember: a red flag isn't automatically proof that something is wrong.

It's a reason to stop, investigate and gather further evidence where appropriate before making your assessment decision.

A good assessor should always be asking:

Is the evidence valid, authentic, current, sufficient and reliable?

๐Ÿ‘€ Assessors & IQAs โ€“ what other red flags would you add to the list?

โญ Another AET learner successfully qualified!

We recently received this fantastic feedback from a learner who completed their Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) with Brooks and Kirk:

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œThe online platform was easy to navigate, feedback was prompt and informativeโ€ฆ Would happily use again and recommend!โ€

We particularly love hearing about the prompt and informative feedback they received. When you're studying online, having the right support available throughout your qualification can make a huge difference.

The learner also highlighted a delay to their planned microteach due to insufficient candidate numbers. While sometimes unavoidable, we completely understand the frustration this caused and appreciate their patience while we rearranged the session.

Most importantly, another learner has now completed their AET and can take what they've learned forward into teaching and training. ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿง  Want to remember more of what you study? Stop just rereading it.

One of the most well-supported ways to learn is Active Recall โ€“ sometimes referred to in research as retrieval practice or practice testing.

Instead of repeatedly reading the same information, you actively challenge yourself to retrieve what you've learned from memory.

It's simple:

1๏ธโƒฃ STUDY โ€“ Read through a section of your learning materials.

2๏ธโƒฃ CLOSE IT โ€“ Put the material away so you can't see the answers.

3๏ธโƒฃ RECALL โ€“ Write down or explain aloud everything you can remember.

4๏ธโƒฃ CHECK โ€“ Go back to the material. What did you remember? What did you miss?

5๏ธโƒฃ REPEAT โ€“ Revisit the topic later and test yourself again.

๐Ÿ”ฌ And there's research behind it.

A major review by Dunlosky et al. (2013) examined 10 commonly used learning techniques and rated practice testing as a "high utility" learning technique.

The same review rated rereading as "low utility", suggesting that repeatedly reading your notes may not be the most effective use of your study time.

So instead of:

โŒ Read โ†’ Reread โ†’ Reread

Try:

โœ… Study โ†’ Recall โ†’ Check โ†’ Repeat

Next time you sit down to study, close your notes and see how much you can remember. You might be surprised by what you know โ€“ and what you need to revisit!

๐Ÿ“š Describe, Explain, Analyseโ€ฆ Whatโ€™s the Difference?

Ever read an assessment question and know the subject, but aren't quite sure what the question actually wants you to do?

The command word can give you a big clue.

๐Ÿ”น IDENTIFY โ€“ Give the key information or name what is being asked for.

๐Ÿ”น DESCRIBE โ€“ Give a detailed account of what something is like, including its key features or characteristics.

๐Ÿ”น EXPLAIN โ€“ Go further by showing how or why something happens. Reasons and examples can help demonstrate your understanding.

๐Ÿ”น ANALYSE โ€“ Break the subject down and examine the different parts, considering how they relate to each other and what the information shows.

๐Ÿ’ก Study Tip: Before you start writing an answer, look at the command word first. Ask yourself: What is this question actually asking me to demonstrate?

Understanding the difference can help you write more focused answers and avoid spending time providing information the question hasn't asked for.

And remember, if you're studying with Brooks and Kirk and you're unsure what a question is asking, your tutor is there to support you.

๐ŸŽ“ From Assessor to Lead IQA โ€“ congratulations, Ryan!

We recently received a from Ryan McNally of RDM Technical, who completed his Level 3 CAVA with Brooks and Kirk a little while ago โ€“ and he's certainly been busy since!

Working within the automotive training industry, Ryan is currently an Assessor and IQA, combining his extensive automotive experience with his expertise in vocational education and assessment.

๐Ÿ“š Your first draft doesnโ€™t need to be perfect.

Perfectionism can be one of the biggest barriers to making progress with your qualification.

You might find yourself rewriting the same paragraph, worrying that you haven't written enough or spending far too long trying to get an answer perfect before submitting it.

With our NVQ qualifications, there are no set word counts for your written answers.

Instead, use the size of the answer box as a rough guide to the minimum amount of content expected. Focus on answering the question properly and demonstrating your knowledge, rather than trying to reach a particular number of words.

And remember โ€” you have unlimited resubmissions.

If your answer doesn't quite meet the assessment criteria, your assessor will provide feedback explaining what you need to develop.

So don't let the pursuit of a "perfect" answer stop you from submitting:

โœ๏ธ Answer the question in your own words
๐Ÿ“ Use the answer box as a rough guide
๐Ÿ“ค Submit when you're happy you've answered the question
๐Ÿ’ฌ Read and apply your assessor's feedback
โœ… Resubmit if needed and keep progressing

Your work doesn't have to be perfect first time. That's what feedback is for.

๐Ÿ“ข Got an assessor qualification you havenโ€™t used for a while?

Qualifications such as D32/D33 or A1 donโ€™t simply disappear because youโ€™ve been away from assessment โ€” but if youโ€™re looking to return to the industry, holding the certificate may not be enough on its own.

Employers and awarding organisations may want you to demonstrate that your assessment knowledge and practice are still current and competent, particularly if itโ€™s been several years since you last assessed.

Thatโ€™s where our Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (UPPA) can help.

The UPPA is a knowledge-based assessor qualification that can help you refresh and update your understanding of modern assessment practice, including:

๐Ÿ“š Current assessment principles and requirements
๐ŸŽฏ Planning assessments and choosing appropriate methods
โš–๏ธ Making fair, valid and reliable assessment decisions
๐Ÿค Involving learners and others in assessment
๐Ÿ”’ Quality assurance, standardisation and good practice

Already qualified but been out of assessment for a while? Updating your knowledge could be an important first step towards getting back into the industry.
