Cold water shock can affect anyone, even the strongest swimmers🌊

While rivers, reservoirs and lakes may appear calm, they can hide powerful currents, sudden drops and dangerously cold temperatures.

Big thanks to our charity-funded Community Resuscitation Engagement Officer Megan, for helping to spread this vital message during Drowning Prevention Week.

Megan and community first responders Paul, Norman and Brian, who is from the Upper Eden CFR Team, attended a community event in the Lake District alongside our emergency service partners, local lifeguards and council, raising awareness of water safety and highlighting the lifesaving importance of CPR.

If you’re heading near the water this summer, know the risks and stay safe.🌞

As Learning Disability Week begins today, Senior Paramedic Mark Plant is sharing his experience of living and working with dyslexia and dyspraxia, conditions that can affect reading, writing, organisation and coordination.

Mark reflects on his early career and the challenges he faced before receiving a diagnosis: “Looking back, I spent years fearing what people might think of me. That fear was far bigger than the reality.”

After getting support and workplace adjustments, he says the difference has been significant: “They gave me a laptop and showed me how to use speech-to-text software, mind mapping and other tools to structure my work. The support was incredible and made a huge difference.”

Mark now uses assistive technology and AI tools in his role and studies and says understanding in the workplace is key.

His message for Learning Disability Week is clear: “Don’t be afraid to let people know. The support is there. Ask for help when you need it. Don’t fear fear.”

“This is me aged nine years old outside the old Walton Hospital in Liverpool dreaming of one day working for the ambulance service.

"Earlier this year, at the age of 43, I finally found the courage to make that dream a reality and joined NWAS. It's been a great start, and I'm looking forward to building a career here. I'd encourage anyone not to give up on their dreams and aspirations, no matter how long they take to achieve.

“I’d like to thank Glyn, the wonderful NWAS museum curator in Crosby, for the reunion with the same ambulance taken in the original photo.”

Ambulance Care Assistant Daniel Jordan, based in Merseyside.
