Important update - temporary disruption to heating and hot water at Royal Bolton Hospital ⚠️

We are currently experiencing an issue affecting heating and hot water across our inpatient areas.

Our teams have put measures in place to minimise any discomfort and are working hard to support our patients, including providing blankets if necessary.

We want to reassure patients, families and carers that we are still able to provide safe care although not to the same standard that we would ordinarily want to deliver. Until the issue has been resolved, patients will not have access to hot water for washing and showering.

If you have an appointment or a booked procedure, please attend as planned unless we contact you directly.

If you are in labour or have any concerns relating to your pregnancy, please contact Maternity Triage on 01204 390612 before attending the hospital so you can be advised on the next steps.

In the event of an emergency, please do attend the hospital and we will ensure that you receive the right care.

We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and appreciate your understanding while we manage the situation.

We're urging you to use services wisely ahead of resident doctor industrial action and England’s first World Cup match.

Residents doctors have planned strikes from 7am on Monday 15 to 7am Friday 19 June, which coincides with England’s World Cup game against Croatia on the Wednesday.

Previous World Cup tournaments have seen a rise in demand for NHS services due to an increase in alcohol-related incidents and injuries, and with services already under extra pressure during industrial action, NHS leaders are asking people to think carefully about which services they need.

Dr Rauf Munshi, Medical Director, said: “We’re expecting our services to be much busier than normal as we manage another round of industrial action.

“Over the next few days please think carefully about which NHS service you need. Our Emergency Department is always here to help if you have a life or limb-threatening condition.

“If your condition isn’t an emergency, to make sure we can treat the sickest patients as quickly as possible, please consider accessing other services such as your local GP or pharmacy.

“If you are ever unsure about where to go, NHS 111 online can provide advice for your symptoms.”

You're invited to share your experiences of receiving care at our paediatric Emergency Department.

A patient forum will host up to 20 people to talk about what the care of their child was like and to discuss what worked well and what could be improved.

We're in the early stages of exploring plans to redevelop the department, with feedback being used to help shape the service in the future and to ensure it continues to meet the needs of local families.

The session will take place at on Tuesday 30 June 2026, 10am – 12pm, in the Seminar Room at Royal Bolton Hospital’s Emergency Department.

To register your interest in attending please email [email protected] or call 01204 390252.

Health and care staff work hard to care for us. Racism should never be part of their job.

Whether it’s a direct insult or throwaway comment, racism in any form is harmful and unacceptable.

One of our consultants, Jeff Kwartz, has joined NHS colleagues across Greater Manchester to create a short video highlighting the reality of racism experienced by staff

Watch the ‘No Space for Racism’ campaign video and find out how to make a stand against racism.

Processing 6,000,000 tests a year, Clinical Biochemistry offers a very broad range of different tests which includes immunology and serology as well as routine biochemistry tests such as hormones, inflammatory markers, electrolytes, tumour markers, and various tests of organ function.

This area is highly automated but Biomedical Scientists have evaluate all abnormal results; considering the clinical details, previous results, and sample quality; to ensure that results that are sent out are accurate.

Our Specimen Reception area is staffed by a team of Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs). This is an incredibly busy area as all specimens initially arrive in reception before being sent to Microbiology and Cellular Pathology.

Specimens for Blood Sciences are booked-in here onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), an essential step to allow all the analysers to recognise the sample and associated test requests.

Our staff here check each sample and request carefully to ensure that the right patient receives the right test.
