🐝 So what's going on up on the Callywith Trail? 🐝

If you've noticed lots of bees buzzing low over the ground recently, you've probably spotted Ivy Bees.

These fascinating bees are among our latest-flying pollinators, active from September through to early November, when ivy is in flower. This sandy, sunny, south-facing bank along the Callywith Trail provides the perfect nesting habitat for them ☀️

Right now, male Ivy Bees are emerging in large numbers and can often be seen patrolling low over the ground in search of females. When a female appears, dozens of eager males may gather around her, forming what is known as a "mating ball".

This species was only described as new to science in 1993 and was first recorded in the UK in 2001. However, Ivy Bees are not thought to have a negative impact on our native wildlife, as they emerge late in the year after many other bee species have already completed their life cycle. The males do not have a sting, and while the females do, they are very docile and are unlikely to use it unless provoked.

So, next time you're on the trail, take a moment to watch the action. It might look chaotic, but it's all part of the remarkable life cycle of one of our newest bee species. 🐝💚

Today is International Clean Air for blue skies Day.

Did you know trees are nature's ultimate air purifiers? 🌳

They clean the air by absorbing toxic gases like carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide through their leaves, while simultaneously releasing fresh oxygen. Their leaves, bark, and branches also act as physical filters that trap airborne dust, ash, and smoke until rain safely washes them away. By providing shade and cooling the environment, trees even slow down the chemical reactions that form urban smog.

Let's protect our green spaces! 🌍💚

Planning a school visit to Cardinham Woods this term (or know somebody who might be)?

We love welcoming schools to Cardinham and helping young people connect with the forest.

To help us provide the best possible experience for everyone, all school and educational group visits must be pre-booked by contacting our local learning team before you arrive.

Why is booking so important?

🥪 Cafe planning
The cafe team can only roster appropriate staffing levels if they know large groups are coming. Unexpected school visits can put significant pressure on the cafe and affect service for all visitors.

🚽 Toilet facilities
Knowing about school visits in advance allows us to schedule additional cleaning where needed. If we aren't aware of your visit, facilities may not receive the extra cleaning they require.

🚌 Coach parking
Coach parking space is limited. During busy periods, multiple coaches may already be booked onto site, so advance notice helps us manage parking safely and efficiently.

ℹ Important visitor information
When you book, we can provide information before your visit, including our site code of conduct, details about facilities, advice on lunch arrangements, and the opportunity to arrange an introductory talk from our team.

💚 Supporting all visitors
Advance planning helps us manage busy periods and minimise the impact on other visitors enjoying the site.

Our hearts go out to our friends at New Forest - Forestry England who have been clearing up and assessing the damage of a fire which destroyed an area of over 100 hectares!

Large sections of heathland has been burnt removing all vegetation including heathers, gorse and pillwort, a rare plant found in the New Forest.

A significant number of ancient beech and oak trees which have been standing on the site for hundreds of years have also been destroyed as the fire penetrated their root systems.

A considerable number of wildlife had sadly been destroyed however the team were able to carry out rescues and relocate surviving species to nearby areas of the Forest.

Please remember fires and BBQs are not permitted on any Forestry England land unless stated otherwise. By following this rule you are helping to care and look after these special places!

For now our thoughts are with the New Forest Team as they navigate restoring the land 💚
