Blyth Sports Centre has expanded and developed over the last 50 years into a superb multi-use centre, including extensive refurbishment between 2019-2021. Blyth Sports Centre is home to a 25m Swimming Pool, Learner Pool, Sauna, Steam, Spa, 8 Court Sports Hall, Gym, Soft Play, Cafe, Meeting Room, Cycling Studio, Exercise Studio’s and the Council’s Learning Skills service.

Front squats: brutal, effective, and worth learning properly 🔥”

The front squat is AMAZING for building:
🔥 Quads
💪🏼 Core strength
🏋🏼‍♀️ Upright posture
⚡ Overall squat mechanics

✅ What good form should look like:
• Bar resting across the front of the shoulders
• Elbows high throughout the movement
• Chest proud & upright
• Core braced before every rep
• Knees tracking over toes
• Controlled lowering phase
• Drive straight back up through the full foot

❌ Common mistakes:
• Elbows dropping down
• Chest collapsing forwards
• Losing core tension
• Heels lifting
• Holding the bar in the hands instead of the shoulders
• Rushing the movement
• Cutting depth short because of mobility

Think of it like this:
📚 “Keep your elbows up like you’re balancing books on them.”

Front squats will humble you FAST 😅 but they’re incredible for improving strength, posture, and squat control when done properly 👏🏼

Stay upright, stay braced, and let the legs do the work 💪🏼

Before adding more weight to the bar… fix the basics first 👏🏼

The back squat is one of the BEST exercises for building:
🏋🏼‍♀️ Lower body strength
🍑 Glutes
🔥 Quads
💪🏼 Core stability

✅ What good form should look like:
• Bar sitting securely across upper back
• Feet around shoulder width apart
• Brace your core before every rep
• Chest lifted with a neutral spine
• Hips and knees bend together
• Knees track over toes
• Hit depth YOU can control
• Drive through the full foot to stand up

❌ Common mistakes:
• Knees collapsing inwards
• Heels lifting off the floor
• Losing tension at the bottom
• Folding forwards excessively
• Looking too far up or down
• Rushing reps
• Squatting without bracing properly

Think of it like this:
🛠️ “Brace first, then squat.”

A good squat should feel strong and controlled — not like you’re fighting to stay upright 😅👏🏼

Don’t chase weight at the expense of form. Strong basics build strong lifts 💪🏼

MEET THE TEAM 👋🏼

Say hello to Mitch 👋🏼

Mitch is one of the newer members of the team, but he’s actually worked with us before — so some of you may already recognise him! 💪🏼

Outside of the gym, Mitch is also part of the local swim club 🏊🏼‍♂️

You’ll usually find him in the gym on Thursdays leading our Functional Training sessions, helping members improve strength, fitness, and overall conditioning 🔥

Be sure to say hi if you see him around the centre 👏🏼
