A resident has been fined £600 for using an unlicensed waste carrier who fly tipped their rubbish on farmland in Weedon.
They arranged for the waste to be removed through Facebook Marketplace, paid in cash and did not check if the carrier was licensed.

West Northamptonshire Council’s Environmental Crime Team investigated the case and issued the fixed penalty notice after the resident was found to be failing in the duty of care to ensure their waste was handled properly.

The resident, who cannot be named as the offer and then payment of a fixed penalty discharges their liability of the offence, also had to pay to have the waste removed from the farmland and disposed of legally.

The action follows a reminder from the council last month urging residents to take care when arranging waste collections.

People are reminded to take a few simple steps before handing over their waste:

Check the person or company is a registered waste carrier
Ask to see their licence and note vehicle details
Get a waste transfer note
Avoid cash-only payments
Be cautious of social media adverts – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is
Councillor Andrew Last – Cabinet Member for HR, Corporate and Regulatory Services, said: “This case shows how easy it is to get caught out, even when you are trying to do the right thing.

“If you use an unlicensed carrier, your waste could be dumped illegally and you could face a fine. The good news is a few simple checks can protect you and help keep our communities clean.

“We will continue to take action against those who damage our environment, but residents can also support this work by taking care when arranging collections.”

People can check a waste carrier is properly registered with the Environment Agency.

As we celebrate Local Council Clerk Week (8–12 June 2026), Blisworth Parish Council would like to recognise and thank our Clerk, Angela Billing, for her outstanding dedication, professionalism and commitment to our village.

Behind the scenes, our Clerk plays a vital role in ensuring that the Parish Council operates effectively, transparently and in the best interests of residents. From supporting councillors with governance and legal matters, to working with local organisations, managing projects, responding to residents’ enquiries and helping secure improvements for the village, her contribution is immense.

The achievements of the Parish Council are only possible through a strong partnership between councillors, our Clerk and the many voluntary and community organisations that make Blisworth such a special place to live. Angela works tirelessly with these groups, local authorities and residents to help deliver positive outcomes for our community.

The role of a Parish Clerk is often unseen, but it is at the heart of local democracy and community leadership. We are fortunate to have a Clerk whose knowledge, commitment and passion for Blisworth consistently go above and beyond what is expected.

On behalf of the Parish Council, thank you, Angela, for everything you do for our village. Your hard work, resilience and dedication are greatly appreciated by councillors, community organisations and residents alike.

Fire Service recruiting enthusiastic young people to join Fire Cadet programme

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service has opened applications for its Fire Cadet programme, inviting young people across the county to challenge themselves, learn new skills and become part of a team that makes a real difference in the community.

The Fire Cadets programme offers hands-on experience of what it is like to be a part of a Fire and Rescue Service.

Through weekly sessions held at fire stations across Northamptonshire, Cadets will develop practical skills, leadership abilities and personal confidence in a supportive team environment.

Alongside learning practical firefighting skills, Fire Cadets play an active role in the community. The Cadets have the opportunity to attend local and national events, sharing safety advice and demonstrating the methods used by firefighters to protect the public.

Young people aged between 13 – 17 are invited to apply. Applicants must be able to commit to attending one session a week during term time, and a minimum of six community events per year.

No prior experience is needed – just enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to learn.

Youth Engagement Support Officer Ed Harvey, one of the programme’s leaders, said:

“Fire Cadets is a great opportunity for young people to push themselves, build confidence and become part of a team.

“We’re looking for motivated young people who want to learn new skills, make new friends and take on challenges they can be proud of.”

To apply, fill out an application form online. If applicants are successful, they will be invited to join an assessment centre where they will take part in an interview, team activities and practical tasks.

Applications are open until June 30, 2026. To find out more information and apply to become a cadet, visit the website: https://www.northantsfire.gov.uk/become-a-fire-cadet/
