Exciting News for Red Bank Road! ☕📚

A fresh, welcoming new concept is on its way to Bispham.

The former William Hill premises on Red Bank Road are set to be transformed into a brand-new café and book loan hub, bringing a warm community space to one of the Fylde Coast’s most vibrant high streets.

Combining the love of great coffee with the joy of reading, visitors will be able to browse, borrow books, and relax with a fresh brew. It marks another positive step away from empty commercial units, breathing new life into a prominent local spot.

Red Bank Road continues to go from strength to strength, and this new venture will fit right into a bustling strip where there is a clear local appetite for independent, community-focused businesses.

Why Is Premier Inn Closing Its Branded Restaurants?

If you've noticed your local Beefeater, Brewers Fayre, Table Table, or Bar + Block shutting its doors, you aren’t alone. Whitbread—the parent company of Premier Inn—is executing a major overhaul across its UK estate to exit standalone branded restaurants and pivot fully toward its hotel business.

Here is what is driving the move and what it means for customers:

Pivoting to a "Pure-Play" Hotel Model: Hotel rooms generate significantly higher profit margins than casual dining. Whitbread is cutting down lower-margin restaurant spaces to focus on what drives its core revenue: budget hotel stays.

Adding Hotel Capacity: By downsizing or closing massive pub-restaurant footprints, Whitbread is converting excess floor space into roughly 600 to 3,500 additional Premier Inn hotel rooms across high-demand sites.

Shift to In-House, Streamlined Dining: Premier Inn isn’t leaving guests hungry. Instead of running complex, varied menus across different brands (steakhouses, carveries, pub menus), they are replacing them with simplified, unified in-house dining spaces (like The Social or dedicated breakfast rooms). This drastically cuts food waste, staffing friction, and supply chain overhead while catering directly to hotel guests rather than outside walk-ins.

Soaring Hospitality Overhead: Like much of the UK casual dining sector, Whitbread has faced heavy margin squeezes from rising food inflation, higher energy bills, increases in the National Living Wage, and business rates. The restructuring aims to unlock roughly £250 million in operational savings.

For hotel guests, breakfast and essential evening meals remain available on-site. However, the era of dropping into a standalone Beefeater or Brewers Fayre next to the bypass for a Sunday roast has largely come to an end.

Thoughts for local diners & businesses:
Will the loss of these large chain pubs push more diners toward independent local eateries, or does it leave a noticeable gap for family-friendly casual dining in your area? Let us know below!

Seven months after the fire at Smart Mart, every other business is moving on, while the café team is left trapped in bureaucratic purgatory. Seven months of being told to "just wait," only to find out the insurance deadlock has been kicked to the Financial Ombudsman—with an estimated wait of at least another year.

How is any independent, hard-working small business expected to survive that?

You pay your insurance premiums religiously every month under the promise of a safety net. You work endless hours to build something from nothing—pouring in sweat, money, and soul. But when disaster strikes through absolutely no fault of your own, the very corporate institutions meant to catch you end up dragging their heels, dragging out paperwork, and quietly suffocating your livelihood.

A 12-to-19-month timeline isn't "due process." It is systemic failure. For massive corporate underwriters, it’s a line item on a spreadsheet. For local owners dealing with the stress, empty bank accounts, and severe personal health crises on top of it, it’s sheer destruction. It forces honest people into heartbreaking decisions—like having to sell off their own fryers, tables, and equipment just to stay afloat.

This isn’t just bad luck; it’s a glaring example of how the system repeatedly abandons independent operators when they need protection most.

Should Blackpool Airport double down on becoming a premier Silicon-on-Sea tech & enterprise zone, or should the primary focus still be fighting to bring back commercial passenger flights?

The new commercial developments, green data hubs, and modern office spaces at the Enterprise Zone are attracting serious investment and year-round business revenue to Squires Gate.

Yet, a huge portion of the town still argues that without scheduled holiday flights connecting the Fylde Coast to Europe again, the site will never reach its true potential.

Some argue that tech parks and data infrastructure generate far more sustainable, high-paying local jobs than budget airlines ever could.

Others believe a thriving airport without regular passenger departures is a missed open goal for local tourism, prestige, and connectivity.

If you had to pick the single biggest priority for Blackpool’s economy over the next decade: Tech/Enterprise Hub or Commercial Passenger Hub?

Let’s debate it in the comments. 👇
